Urs Fischer

Documenting Urs Fischer's solo exhibition of the same title at the Kunsthalle Wien in 2012, Skinny Sunrise presents a survey of the artist's oeuvre. Among the new sculptures produced for the exhibition is Fischer's first candle self-portrait, which is set alight and slowly burns down before our eyes, in the fashion of his acclaimed installation at the Arsenale di Venezia, which was described by the Financial Times as the single most stunning new piece anywhere in the 2011 Biennale.

A remarkable grab bag of images - from bucolic nature to a discarded Christmas tree, construction debris to the creamy thighs of a female nude - come together to describe the artist's world. Leitner writes: ""An old lady observes. A monkey copulates. They are happy in Berlin... In Paris they meet Santa Claus who gives them his garter belt. The Daiquiri tastes like a glacier and they cite Hemingway in Havana."""

Our Century

Based in California, US-artist Raymond Pettibon is one of the most thorough chroniclers of American milieus of popular culture. A Goya of our times, whose "Desastres" depict less the wars actually waged than the confrontations taking place inside people's heads, the battles between youth cultures, and the cops-'n'-robbers games transfixed into durable and quotable shape in the repertoire of images provided by film noir. While a detailed catalogue presents all 500 works shown in the exhibition "Whatever it is you're looking for you won't find it here," an extensive interview with Raymond Pettibon conveys an idea of his intellectual microcosm and the productive energy unfolding in his work.
