Gerard Termorshuizen

Herman Salomonson (1892-1942), afkomstig uit een gegoed Joods-Indisch milieu, verruilde al snel zijn studie aan de Technische Hogeschool in Delft voor een carrière in de journalistiek en de literatuur. Voor De Groene Amsterdammer schreef hij over de Grote Oorlog van 1914-1918. In de jaren twintig nam hij het hoofdredacteurschap op zich van een van de oudste Indische kranten, de Java-Bode. Literair actief was hij onder het pseudoniem Melis Stoke. Zijn Rijmkronieken,waarin hij zich zeer persoonlijk uitliet over maatschappelijke en politieke onderwerpen, waren bij vele lezers populair en zijn nog steeds een bijzondere bron voor onze kennis van het leven in Nederlands-Indië. Na zijn terugkeer in Nederland bleef hij als directeur van het persbureau Aneta de contacten met de kolonie onderhouden. Tijdens de meidagen van 1940 fungeerde Salomonson als verbindingsofficier in het Nederlandse leger en was hij medeverantwoordelijk voor de omroepberichten. Dat laatste werd hem fataal. Na een heroïsch gedragen periode van gevangenschap was zijn laatste gang naar het concentratiekamp Mauthausen.

As soon as he passed the equator, every Dutch journalist became a hothead, violent in his reactions to the neglect of the Dutch East Indies colony, where the press was the only mouthpiece for public opinion. In the absence of freedom of the press, the militant, often emotional style of the Indies press, popularly dubbed 'tropical style', not infrequently gave rise to head-on collisions between newspapers and governors. Because they circulated in relatively small communities, there was a strong bond between these papers and their readers, with their unquenchable thirst for diversion and entertainment. Hence they are an invaluable source on the intimate history of the Europeans and on inter-ethnic relations in the colony, while the serial stories they featured formed the basis for Dutch Indies literature. This unique work, based on the actual newspapers themselves from 1744 to 1905 (about seventy in all), describes the history of the Indies press. It contains a wealth of information on colonial politics, society and culture.
