Singles sind vielen ein Argernis. Das Unbehagen beginnt schon bei den Sozial statistikern, die diese Gruppe nicht recht einzuordnen vermogen und bei Aus ziihlungen hilfsweise auf die amtlicherseits vorgegebenen Bestimmungen, le dig' und, Einpersonenhaushalte' zUrUckgreifen miissen. Und es findet sich verstiirkt bei einigen Bevolkerungswissenschaftlern, die genau zu wissen scheinen, was von den Motiven dieser Lebensform zu halten ist, z. B. : "Kon taktschwiiche und Ausnutzung von Beziehungen reichen sich die Hiinde." 1 Singles sind anderen dagegen eine rechte Freude. Ihr vermutetes Wohlbefin den bringt kriiftige Farbtupfer mit sich. Die Medien - in deren Reihen sich nicht wenige Exemplare dieser Spezies tummeln diirften - werfen mit scho ner RegelmiiBigkeit Titelgeschichten, Specials und ganze Serien dazu auf den Markt. Offensichtlich vermuten sie eine weiter lebhafte Nachfrage ihrer Leser-, Horer- und Zuschauerschaft daran, eine noch unbefriedigte Neugier der einen am alternativen Lebensentwurf, der anderen an der Darstellung der eigenen, neuen Existenzweise. Es diirften die darob ausgeschickten Journalisten gelegentlich kriiftig an den Stories mitgestaltet haben. Denn bei einer GroBzahl der dabei auftauchenden Fragen war zumeist nur soviel klar, daB noch nicht besonders viel klar sein konnte. Auch neuere Arbeiten zustiindiger Fachdisziplinen zum Thema Sin gles miissen einriiumen, daB es "bislang kaum empirische Untersuchungen dazu gibt"Z, wundern sich, daB "dies kaum als ein soziologisch relevantes Thema betrachtet worden,3 ist oder "wie wenig sich die Sozialwissenschaften mit diesem Phiinomen beschiiftigt haben". 4 Das Erstaunen iiber die lange wissenschaftliche Inkubationszeit ist nachvoll ziehbar.

Europe is getting closer. So are European social sciences. However, this is easier done in theory development and central research questions. When it comes to data the mutual understanding is far from perfect, due to a lack of knowledge about the data bases of the respective countries and the EU in general. This is particularly true when it comes to the regional level. This volume will help to improve the insight into the rich stock of European datasets which cover any kind of regional information. Many institutions ranging from statistical offices to more academic research centres and commercial enterprises report their offerings with special emphasis on the regional level (e.g. European Community Household Panel, European Social Survey, Labour Force Survey). Central categories such as NUTS and LAU are explained and discussed. In addition, typical examples of socio-economic cross-border and multi-level studies highlight the power of a regionalized European perspective. Furthermore, information about special tools for such type of analysis is included in the volume.
