Globalization both implies and requires economic interdependence; and this should bring with it a heightened sense of the interconnectedness of the participating societies. Die Untersuchung legt eine systematische neue Rekonstruktion der „Theorie des kommunikativen Handels“ von Jürgen Habermas vor. Sie erörtert im Kontext der klassischen Soziologie, der Soziologie der Gegenwartsgesellschaft, der Evolutionstheorie und Sprachtheorie die Probleme dieses Forschungsprogramms. Aus der Sicht der soziologischen Theorie ist dabei der Problembezug, die Folgeprobleme dieses Ansatzes zu erkennen und wie sie zu bearbeiten sind. Angesprochen ist damit der Problembezug der Grenzen der Innovationsfähigkeit dieses Forschungsprogramms. Das betrifft die grundlegende Fragestellungen der soziologischen Theorie in der postmodernen Gesellschaft und ihrer Evolution zur „nächsten Gesellschaft“, die alle Funktionssysteme z. Der vorliegende Band profiliert die veränderte Situation der soziologischen Theoriebildung und der Gesellschaftstheorie, die sich infolge der Globalisierung seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre eingestellt hat. Die veränderte Situation betrifft die Zentrum- und Peripheriekonstellation, die institutionellen Veränderungen der Funktionssysteme, die askriptive Solidarität und die Struktur des Weltsystems. Die Neufassung der Theorie der strukturellen Evolution der gesellschaftlichen Kommunikation, der Soziologie der Mitgliedschaft und der Evolution der politischen Ordnungen wird dadurch eingeleitet. Damit ging einher, dass die kulturellen Orientierungen der Moderne und die Institutionen der modernen Gesellschaft herausgefordert, geprüft und verändert wurden. Die Moderne wird von der soziologischen Theorie nicht mehr als ein unvollendetes Projekt im Zeitalter der Globalisierung und der Postmoderne reinterpretiert. Das hat zum Umbau der überlieferten Theorien der strukturellen Evolution, der Modernisierungstheorie und der Differenzierungstheorie geführt, auf die wir bereits in der soziologischen Theorie zurückblicken.

Issues of subjectivity and consciousness are dealt with in very different ways in the analytic tradition and in the idealistic–phenomenological tradition central to continental philosophy. This book brings together analytically inspired philosophers working on the continent with English-speaking philosophers to address specific issues regarding subjectivity and consciousness. The issues range from acquaintance and immediacy in perception and apperception, to the role of agency in bodily ‘mine-ness’, to self-determination (Selbstbestimmung) through (free) action. Thus involving philosophers of different traditions should yield a deeper vision of consciousness and subjectivity; one relating the mind not only to nature, or to first-person authority in linguistic creatures–questions which, in the analytic tradition, are sometimes treated as exhausting the topic–but also to many other aspects of mind’s understanding of itself in ways which disrupt classic inner/outer boundaries.
