Jazz has never been simply music. From its very inception, jazz has been imbued with social meaning. This is what makes this kind of music an interesting field of study not only for the music historian, but also for the sociologist and the cultural historian. In the state socialist countries of East-Central Europe after World War II, jazz acquired a special meaning as a symbol of the American way of life, a symbol of freedom - at least for its admirers. The ruling elites and the establishment regarded jazz as music of the class enemy, a music of social degeneration. These contrasting views on jazz led to hot debates over jazz and the implementation of complicated policies towards jazz music and the jazz scene, which oscillated between affirmation and repression.

Mit der Edition zum Mord an den europäischen Juden durch das nationalsozialistisch regierte Deutschland wird erstmals eine umfassende, auf 16 Bände geplante Auswahl von Quellen vorgelegt. Das Werk zeigt die zeitgenössischen Kontexte, die Dynamiken und die Zwischenstufen des politischen und gesellschaftlichen Prozesses, der zu dem beispiellosen Massenverbrechen führte. Es lässt sich als wissenschaftliches Hilfsmittel nutzen oder kann als Schriftdenkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas gelesen werden: von Lehrern, Forschern, Studenten und von allen Interessierten, die sich mit dem Holocaust auseinandersetzen wollen. Die Edition umfasst authentische Zeugnisse der Verfolger und der Opfer. Sie sind wissenschaftlich kommentiert und werden zum weit überwiegenden Teil erstmals veröffentlicht. Band 1 dokumentiert die Judenverfolgung zwischen 1933 und 1937. Die chronologisch angeordneten Schriftzeugnisse lassen sichtbar werden, wie die Entrechtung und soziale Isolation der Juden in Deutschland vorangetrieben wurde, welche Rolle der Terror, das staatliche Kalkül und die Gleichgültigkeit sehr vieler Deutscher spielten. Nach kurzer Zeit war ein Zustand erreicht, wie ihn der Berliner Rabbiner Joachim Prinz 1935 beschrieb: 'Des Juden Los ist: nachbarlos zu sein. Wir würden das alles nicht so schmerzlich empfinden, hätten wir nicht das Gefühl, dass wir einmal Nachbarn besessen haben.'

This book explores the contradictory development of gender roles in Central and Eastern Europe including Russia. In light of the social changes that followed the collapse of communism and the rise of new conservatism in Eastern Europe, it studies new forms of gender relationships and reassesses the status quo of female empowerment. Moreover, leading scholars in gender studies discuss how right-wing populism and conservative movements have affected sociopolitical discourses and concepts related to gender roles, rights, and attitudes, and how Western feminism in the 1990s may have contributed to this conservative turn. Mainly focusing on power constellations and gender, the book is divided into four parts: the first explores the history of and recent trends in feminist movements in Eastern Europe, while the second highlights the dynamics and conflicts that gained momentum after neoconservative parties gained political power in post-socialist countries. In turn, the third part discusses new empowerment strategies and changes in gender relationships. The final part illustrates the identities, roles, and concepts of masculinity created in the sociocultural and political context of Eastern Europe.
