Phenomena such as the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, or the surge of political populism show that the current phase of accelerated globalization is over. New concepts are needed in order to respond to this exhaustion of the global project: the volume scrutinizes these responses in the aesthetic realm and under a "post-global" banner, while incorporating alternative, non-Western epistemologies and literatures of the post-colonial Global South.

Parallel to the abolition of Atlantic slavery, new forms of indentured labour stilled global capitalism's need for cheap, disposable labour. The famous 'coolie trade' - mainly Asian labourers transferred to French and British islands in the Indian Ocean, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, as well as to Portuguese colonies in Africa - was one of the largest migration movements in global history. Indentured contract workers are perhaps the most revealing example of bonded labour in the grey area between the poles of chattel slavery and 'free' wage labour. This interdisciplinary volume addresses historically and regionally specific cases of bonded labour relations from the 18th century to sponsorship systems in the Arab Gulf States today.

The debate over the concept of world literature, which has been taking place with renewed intensity over the last twenty years, is tightly bound up with the issues of global interconnectedness in a polycentric world. Most recently, critiques of globalization-related conceptualizations, in particular, have made themselves heard: to what extent is the concept of world literature too closely connected with the political and economic dynamics of globalization? Such questions cannot be answered simply through theoretical debate. The material side of the production of world literature must therefore be more strongly integrated into the conversation than it has been. Using the example of Latin American literatures, this volume demonstrates the concrete construction processes of world literature. To that purpose, archival materials have been analyzed here: notes, travel reports, and correspondence between publishers and authors. The Latin American examples provide particularly rich information about the processes of institutionalization in the Western world, as well as new perspectives for a contemporary mapping of world literature beyond the established dynamics of canonization.

Con foco en la literatura que, de acuerdo con postulados teóricos diseñados en los años 60, es concebida como latinoamericana y con contribuciones de destacados investigadores de diferentes lugares de Europa, América Latina y EE.UU., el volumen Literatura latinoamericana mundial intenta ser un aporte crítico al actual debate sobre literatura mundial. Tres bloques conceptuales, que también son tres de los principales núcleos en torno a los cuales gira la discusión, lo organizan: "gatekeepers", con foco en los dispositivos, actores o instituciones que vehiculizan u obturan la circulación internacional de literatura; "traducción", con reflexiones acerca de este mecanismo ineludible, pero siempre problemático, para que la literatura trascienda fronteras nacionales; y "literaturas locales", concentrado en escrituras y proyectos que, al permanecer aferrados a contextos específicos, constituyen el lado negado de ciertos modelos hegemónicos de la teoría de la literatura mundial.

The existence of World Literature depends on specific processes, institutions, and actors involved in the global circulation of literary works. The contributions of this volume aim to pay attention to these multiple material dimensions of Latin American 20th and 21st century literatures. From perspectives informed by materialism, sociology, book studies, and digital humanities, the articles of this volume analyze the role of publishing houses, politics of translation, mediators and gatekeepers, allowing insights into the processes that enable books to cross borders and to be transformed into globally circulating commodities. The book focusses both on material (re)sources of literary archives, key actors in literary and cultural markets, prizes and book fairs, as well as on recent dimension of the digital age. Statements of some of the leading representatives of the global publishing world complement these analyses of the operations of selection and aggregation of value to literary texts.

Ansätze der postcolonial studies, vor allem die topologischen Konzepte zur Analyse des Schreibens zwischen verschiedenen geographischen Sphären werden immer wichtiger für die Analyse französischsprachiger Literaturen und Filme. Auch in literarischen Texten selbst kommt die Reflexion räumlicher Bewegungen im Zeitalter von Migration und Globalisierung zum Ausdruck - das Schreiben auf der Grenze und in Bewegung spielt eine immer größere Rolle. Der Band fokussiert eine Bandbreite an Texten von der Kolonialzeit des 19. Jahrhunderts aus der Karibik und des Orientalismus, über die Zwanziger Jahre bis hin zu postkolonialen Literaturen und Filmen des 20. und 21. Jahrhundert aus Frankreich und Subsahara-Afrika, Kanada und der Karibik. Im Zentrum steht die Relevanz der kulturwissenschaftlichen Kategorie Raum - in den Blick gelangt zugleich der Raum im Text und der Text als Raum. Der Band verbindet erstmals den spatial turn mit Ansätzen der postcolonial studies und erprobt in exemplarischen Analysen ihren methodischen Wert für die Frankoromanistik.

Die in den letzten zwanzig Jahren mit neuer Intensität geführte Debatte um den Begriff der Weltliteratur ist eng mit Fragen globaler Vernetzungen in einer polyzentrischen Welt verbunden. Zuletzt wurde Kritik insbesondere an globalisierungsaffinen Konzeptualisierungen laut: Inwiefern ist der Weltliteraturbegriff zu sehr mit politischen und ökonomischen Globalisierungsdynamiken Hand in Hand gegangen? Solche Fragen sind nicht allein in der theoretischen Kontroverse zu klären. Vielmehr muss die materielle Seite der Produktion von Weltliteratur stärker als bisher einbezogen werden. Der Band zeigt anhand lateinamerikanischer Literaturen, wie Konstruktionsprozesse von Weltliteratur konkret ablaufen. Dazu werden Archivmaterialien ausgewertet: Notizen, Reiseberichte, Korrespondenzen zwischen Verleger/innen und Autor/innen. Gerade die lateinamerikanischen Beispiele geben Aufschluss sowohl über Institutionalisierungsprozesse in der westlichen Welt als auch über neue Perspektiven für eine zeitgemäße Kartierung von Weltliteratur jenseits etablierter Kanonisierungsdynamiken.

Wie wird Weltliteratur gemacht?

Werden nicht in der Karibik des 19. Jahrhunderts Phänomene und Prozesse vorweg-genommen, die heute erst ins Bewusstsein gelangen? Der Blick auf die kaleidoskopartige Welt der Karibik über literarische und kulturelle Transprozesse in jener Epoche erlaubt völlig neue Einsichten in die frühen Prozesse der kulturellen Globalisierung. Rassistische Diskurse, etablierte Modelle „weißer“ Abolitionisten, Erinnerungspolitiken und die bisher kaum wahrgenommene Rolle der haitianischen Revolution verbinden sich zu einem Amalgam, das unser gängiges Konzept einer genuin westlichen Moderne in Frage stellt. Migration, Zirkulation und Vernetzung zwischen verschiedensten geographischen Räumen, aber auch Orientierungs- und Heimatlosigkeit gelten als charakteristisch für unsere heutigen Gesellschaften. Diese Phänomene der Deterritorialisierung lassen sich in der karibischen Inselwelt schon für das 19. Jahrhundert beobachten, wo Piraten und Sklavenhändler zwischen Imperien und Kontinenten hin- und hersegeln, Schriftsteller von einem Exil ins nächste fliehen, oder auch analphabetische Kleinkrämerinnen als Nachrichtenüberbringer zwischen den Welten fungieren. Ein faszinierender Ausgangspunkt für die Untersuchung der Bruchstellen kolonialer Systeme.

Kulturtheoretische Versuche, ein Zusammenleben in Frieden und Differenz programmatisch zu fassen, spielen im begonnenen 21. Jahrhundert eine entscheidende Rolle. The study examines cultural effects of various colonial systems of government in the Spanish- and French-speaking Caribbean in a little investigated period of transition: from the French Revolution to the abolition of slavery in Cuba (1789–1886). The comparison of cultural transfer processes by means of literary production from and about the Caribbean, embedded in a broader context of the circulation of culture and knowledge deciphers the different transculturations of European discourses in the colonies as well as the repercussions of these transculturations on the motherland’s ideas of the colonial other: The loss of a culturally binding centre in the case of the Spanish colonies – in contrast to France’s strong presence and binding force – is accompanied by a multirelationality which increasingly shapes hispanophone Caribbean literature and promotes the pursuit for political independence. The book provides necessary revision to the idea that the 19th-century Caribbean can only be understood as an outpost of the European metropolises. Examining the kaleidoscope of the colonial Caribbean opens new insights into the early processes of cultural globalisation and questions our established concept of a genuine western modernity. From the perspective of Latin American Studies, this volume offers a critical contribution to the current debate on world literature. It is structured around three conceptual blocks: "gatekeepers", as the dispositives and actors mediating the international circulation of literature; "translation", as an unavoidable but always problematic mechanism; and "local literatures", as modes of writing that remain intrinsically tied to their contexts.

How can we talk about World Literature if we do not actually examine the world as a whole? Research on World Literature commonly focuses on the dynamics of a western center and a southern periphery, ignoring the fact that numerous literary relationships exist beyond these established constellations of thinking and reading within the Global South. Re-Mapping World Literature suggests a different approach that aims to investigate new navigational tools that extend beyond the known poles and meridians of current literary maps. Using the example of Latin American literatures, this study provides innovative insights into the literary modeling of shared historical experiences, epistemological crosscurrents, and book market processes within the Global South which thus far have received scant attention. The contributions to this volume, from renowned scholars in the fields of World and Latin American literatures, assess travelling aesthetics and genres, processes of translation and circulation of literary works, as well as the complex epistemological entanglements and shared worldviews between Latin America, Africa and Asia. Innerhalb der USA gilt New Orleans seit jeher als die „unamerikanischste“ Stadt, als exotisch und anders, gar als „sozio-geographischer Unfall“. Hier überkreuzen sich nicht nur die Einflüsse verschiedener Kolonialkulturen, sondern auch die Routen des atlantischen Sklavenhandels und der asiatischen Arbeitsmigration und nicht zuletzt die ideellen wie materiellen Transferbewegungen zwischen den beiden Amerikas. Der vorliegende Band macht es sich zur Aufgabe, diese vielfältigen transarealen Zirkulationsprozesse zu analysieren und das Potential New Orleans' zur paradigmatischen Metropole des Globalen Südens auszuloten. Im Fokus stehen verschiedene Formen der kulturellen Kreolisierung, wie sie sich in der Sprache, der Literatur, der Musik, aber auch in Alltagsphänomen wie dem Karneval oder Computerspielen manifestieren. Within the USA, New Orleans has long been considered the ‘un-American’ city, seen as exotic and different, even as a ‘socio-geographical accident’. It is a crossroads not only for the influences of different colonial cultures but also for the routes of the Atlantic slave trade and immigration of Asian workers, and not least for material and non-material transfer between the two Americas. This volume seeks to analyse these manifold transareal circulation processes and to explore New Orleans’s potential as a paradigmatic metropolis of the Global South. The focus is on different forms of creolisation as manifested in language, literature and music, but also in everyday phenomena such as Carnival or computer games.
