The12thInternationalConferenceonMedicalImageComputingandComputer- Assisted Intervention, MICCAI 2009, was held in London, England at Imperial College during September 20–24, 2009. The venue was situated in one of L- don's ?nest locations, adjacent to landmarks such as The Royal Albert Hall and the Science, NaturalHistory and Victoria andAlbert Museums,with Hyde Park just a short walk away. Over the last decade, the MICCAI conferences have become a premier - ternational event, with papers of very high standard addressing the multid- ciplinary ?elds of biomedical image computing, computer-assisted intervention and medical robotics. The conference has attracted annually leading scientists, engineers and clinicians from a wide range of disciplines. This year, we received a record submission of 804 papers from 36 di?- ent countries worldwide. These covered medical image computing (functional and di?usion image analysis, segmentation, physical and functional modelling, shape analysis, atlases and statistical models, registration, data fusion and m- tiscaleanalysis),computer-assistedinterventionsandrobotics(planning and- ageguidanceofinterventions,simulationandtrainingsystems,clinicalplatforms, visualization and feedback, robotics and human–robot interaction), and clinical imagingandbiomarkers(computer-aideddiagnosis,organ/systemspeci?capp- cations, molecular and optical imaging and imaging biomarkers).

Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention -- MICCAI 2009

Rapid technical advances in medical imaging, including its growing application to drug/gene therapy and invasive/interventional procedures, have attracted significant interest in close integration of research in life sciences, medicine, physical sciences and engineering. This is motivated by the clinical and basic science research requi- ment of obtaining more detailed physiological and pathological information about the body for establishing localized genesis and progression of diseases. Current research is also motivated by the fact that medical imaging is increasingly moving from a primarily diagnostic modality towards a therapeutic and interventional aid, driven by recent advances in minimal-access and robotic-assisted surgery. It was our great pleasure to welcome the attendees to MIAR 2004, the 2nd Int- national Workshop on Medical Imaging and Augmented Reality, held at the Xia- shan (Fragrant Hills) Hotel, Beijing, during August 19–20, 2004. The goal of MIAR 2004 was to bring together researchers in computer vision, graphics, robotics, and medical imaging to present the state-of-the-art developments in this ever-growing research area. The meeting consisted of a single track of oral/poster presentations, with each session led by an invited lecture from our distinguished international f- ulty members. For MIAR 2004, we received 93 full submissions, which were sub- quently reviewed by up to 5 reviewers, resulting in the acceptance of the 41 full - pers included in this volume.

MIAR has remained a truly international meeting, bringing together - searchers from all ?elds related to medical image analysis, visualization and targeted intervention.In recent years,technical advances in therapeutic delivery andagrowingdemandforpatient-speci?ctreatmenthaveacceleratedtheclinical applications of MIAR-related techniques. Imaging plays an increasingly imp- tant role in targeted therapy, with interventions such as drug or gene therapy relying on more accurate delivery tailored to individual patients. Rapid progress in surgical methodologies, such as those with robot assistance, demands p- cise guidance from both preoperative and intraoperative imaging.
