In a time of huge political and social upheaval, with many disturbing riots in India she, with the help of the British Government returns to South Wales with her five half-cast children, in a land where there is very little immigration. On the boat voyage over, tired and bitter about being "used", and totally suspicious of men she meets her beloved, whom she first scolds as she thinks that he is after her eldest daughter, now a very beautiful teenager. Their journey continues, and their expereinces are many, varied and ofetn extreme... ...it is said that fact is stranger than fiction...

Moderne klassieker: De geheime tuin meets Frozen. Ze stond in een tuin. Een tuin van ijs. Elke boom, elk blaadje, elke steen, elk grassprietje was glinsterend wit. Jess deed haar ogen dicht en daarna weer open. De tuin was er nog steeds. Hij bestond echt. Ze besefte dat ze haar adem inhield, alsof ze bang was om een betovering te verbreken. Jess is allergisch voor zonlicht. Wanneer ze naar buiten gaat, verbrandt ze meteen. Ze voelt zich eenzaam en geïsoleerd. Op een nacht gaat ze stiekem naar buiten.
