One of the most important manuscripts discovered in recent times is the 4th century Codex Tchacos. It contains 4 texts, two of which (“The Letter of Peter to Philip” and “The [first Apocalypse] of James”) were already known from the finds at Nag Hammadi. The other two present hitherto unknown Gnostic writings (“The Gospel of Judas” and a text which researchers have named “Allogenes”). This publication presents the Coptic texts with a German translation on the facing pages, together with detailed linguistic indexes and observations on the content.

In December 1945, at the base of cliffs that run along the Nile River near the modern-day town of Nag Hammadi, an Egyptian farmer discovered a sealed jar containing thirteen ancient Coptic codices. This second volume finishes the first scholarly complete German translation of the approximately 50 texts from the manuscript find of Nag Hammadi and the texts of the Codex Berolinensis 8502 together with introductions by acknowledged specialists in the field of Coptic Studies (cf. Nag Hammadi Deutsch I, 2001). Most of the texts originated in the 2nd and 3rd centuries and include for example apocryphal Gospels (such as St. Thomas' Gospel) and important original Gnostic documents; they form one of the most important manuscript rediscoveries of the 20th century, and their importance for Biblical scholars and Church historians in particular can hardly be overestimated. The Berlin Working Group on Coptic Gnostic Writings was founded by Hans-Martin Schenke more than 30 years ago. This research team has produced numerous original German translations, text editions and commentaries and many other publications, and has established itself as one of the world's leading research centres for the Nag-Hammadi texts and other Coptic texts.

Die mehrheitlich im 2. und 3. Jahrhundert entstandenen Texte gehören zu den wichtigsten handschriftlichen Neuentdeckungen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sie sind insbesondere für das Studium der Bibelwissenschaften und der frühen Kirchengeschichte von kaum zu überschätzender Bedeutung.
