In the last few decades manuscripts have become a central object of research in all historical disciplines with an interest in the Middle Ages. Manuscripts are not only vehicles for texts and pictures, their concrete presence as objects from the past has also moved to the forefront of scholarly interest. The culture of the age of the manuscript is illuminated from a wide variety of perspectives in this volume. The spectrum encompasses restoration and archivization, representation and presence, reform programs and types of manuscript, history of music from the transmission of fragments, piety and manuscript, programmatics of picture and text, history of manuscript collections and collection profiles.

The term 'literary lives' defines the specific focus on the question of role designs that runs throughout this volume. The focus is on literature, albeit in a broadly conceived sense of the term. The 'role designs' in the sub-title refer first of all to the plurality of different 'careers' that individuals may traverse in the course of their lives, and secondly to the exemplary nature of these literary designs. The articles centre largely on the 13th century, the earliest period in which we encounter a wide-ranging spectrum of roles in all literatures. The extension of the focus back to the late 12th century and forward to the late Middle Ages is intended to give an additional perspective to the central issue the volume inquires into.

Mittelalterliche Literatur und Kunst im Spannungsfeld von Hof und Kloster

Dieses Buch dokumentiert die Ergebnisse der Diskussion zwischen nordamerikanischen und deutschen Mediävisten und eröffnet zugleich eine neue Reihe - mit dem Titel "Transatlantische Studien" (TRAST) -, die es sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, ein Forum des Transfers mediävistischer Forschung zwischen Nordamerika und Europa zu sein. Der Austausch zwischen Fachwissenschaftlern aus dem deutschen Sprachraum, den USA und Kanada zeigte deutlich, wie sporadisch die Wahrnehmung der Forschungsthemen, -methoden und -ergebnisse der jeweils anderen Seite ist. Mit "Kulturen des Manuskriptzeitalters" wird eine hochaktuelle Fragestellung transkontinental zur Diskussion gestellt. Die Beiträge zu diesem Colloquium in Göttingen sind im vorliegenden Band versammelt.
