Die Thematisierung der schädigenden Folgen des Alkoholismus in der Schwangerschaft ist noch heute weitgehend ein Tabu. Auch 40 Jahre nach seiner Erstbeschreibung 1973 ist die dauerhafte Schädigung des noch ungeborenen Kindes durch Alkoholabusus in der Schwangerschaft weitgehend unbekannt.
