Fantasy novels are products of popular culture. They owe their popularity also to the visualization of medievalist artifacts on book covers and designs, illustrations, maps, and marketing: Castles on towering cliffs, cathedral-like architecture, armored heroes and enchanting fairies, fierce dragons and mages follow mythical archetypes and develop pictorial aesthetics of fantasy, completed by gothic fonts, maps and page layout that refer to medieval manuscripts and chronicles. The contributors to this volume explore the patterns and paradigms of a specific medievalist iconography and book design of fantasy which can be traced from the 19th century to the present.

Shame and shamelessness are subject to different conditions for their enactment: While shame manifests bodily what the individual wants to hide, shamelessness by contrast appears as ostentation. However, both have in common the status of the staged and perceived boundary violation. From this action-oriented perspective, the essays in this interdisciplinary book explore the different forms of staging and functions of shame and shamelessness in literature, art, theater and the social communication of the Early Modern Age.

Fantasyliteratur ist aus dem heutigen Buchladen nicht mehr wegzudenken. Von J. R. R. Tolkiens ?Der Herr der Ringe? bis zu George R. R. Martins ?Das Lied von Eis und Feuer? hat sie millionenfache Bucherfolge aufzuweisen. Es gibt keinen Zweifel daran, dass dieser Erfolg auch und gerade einer populären Inszenierung des Mittelalters geschuldet ist. Daraus ergibt sich die Aufgabe der Literaturwissenschaft und speziell der Mediävistik, jenseits jeglicher Gattungsvorbehalte und Epochengrenzen die produktive und kritische Auseinandersetzung mit den Texten der Fantasy zu suchen.0Das Interesse des Bandes gilt dem bisher weitgehend unbeachteten spezifisch literarischen Modus dieser populären Rezeptionsform. Gefragt wird nach Erzählstrukturen und Handlungsräumen, nach dem Figureninventar bzw. Archetypen, nach den literarischen Imaginationen und Phantasmata vom Mittelalter. Ziel ist es, diese Texte aus einer wissenschaftlich-mediävistischen Perspektive zu lesen und damit ihr Faszinationspotential zu erklären.
