Der vorliegende Band der Studien zur Entwicklung der ökonomischen Theorie vereinigt die überarbeiteten Referate der 24. Tagung des Dogmenhistorischen Ausschusses des Vereins für Socialpolitik an der Universität Oldenburg, die sich mit dem Verhältnis von Ökonomie und Religion auseinandersetzte. Während die moderne Wachstumstheorie lange Zeit die Rolle sogenannter weicher" Faktoren vernachlässigte, haben u. a. das rasante Wirtschaftswachstum im konfuzianisch geprägten China sowie die Anschläge des 11. September 2001 durch islamisch-fundamentalistische Terroristen die wechselseitigen Einflüsse zwischen religiösen und ökonomischen Faktoren wieder in den Blickpunkt gerückt. Bereits vor einem Jahrhundert hatte Max Weber in seiner klassischen Studie "Die protestantische Ethik und der 'Geist' des Kapitalismus" sowie in nachfolgenden Schriften die Rolle der Religion in wirtschaftlichen Entwicklungsprozessen und modernen Gesellschaften tiefer analysiert. Die beiden ersten Beiträge setzen sich mit der Behandlung der Wirtschaft in der Bibel, dem Wirtschaftsstil im Alten und im Neuen Testament sowie der Frage auseinander, inwieweit die Bibel ethische Maximen für das Wirtschaften liefert. In den nachfolgenden fünf Beiträgen stehen theologische Konzepte und ihr Einfluss auf die ökonomische Doktrinenbildung vom Mittelalter bis zur Neuzeit im Zentrum der Analyse. Zugleich geht es aber auch um die umgekehrte Frage, inwieweit die Erfordernisse der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung zu einer flexibleren Interpretation religiöser Ge- und Verbote geführt haben, wie sich z. B. an der Vergangenheit von Zinsverboten in christlichen Ländern zeigt."

F.A. Hayek's work has stimulated, challenged and inspired economists for more than 50 years. In two distinct but complementary volumes, The Economics of F.A. van Hayekexplores all relevant aspects of Hayek's theory to investigate whether a synthesis of interpretation is possible and to what extent his economic theory is a sound foundation for both his own philosophy and the development of modern theories. Money and Business Cycles, the first volume, is devoted almost exclusively to Hayek's trade cycle theory and the related dynamic economics with sections on money and the trade cycle, Hayek and structural theories of the business cycle, and Hayek and equilibrium business cycle theory. The essays in this volume focus on Hayek's important contributions to price theory, monetary theory and capital theory in the period from 1924 to 1942 and his ultimate aim to develop a unified theory to explain industrial fluctuations. The main emphasis is on views stressing the importance of credit creation in the monetary process, in a tradition which arguably encompasses Wicksell, the later Swedes and the Austrians, through the later Hicks, the circuit school and contemporary post-Keynesians. In addition, however, there are distinguished contributions from economists with a more `mainstream' approach to the issues. The book is subdivided into four main parts: Part I reviews the theory of a monetary and credit economy; Part II explores alternative views on money and credit; Part III deals with monetary policy issues in North America; and Part IV discusses monetary policy issues in Europe. `Taken together, the contributions to this volume certainly bear out Hick's famous adage about the much closer relationship between `monetary theory' and `monetary history' than is the case in other branches of economic thought.'
