"Die doel van hierdie publikasie is om 'n bruikbare naslaanwerk te wees wat van die belangrikste begrippe in die literatuurwetenskap betreklik bondig verduidelik. Sekere gebruikers kan moontlik voel dat dit 'n veel sterker Suid-Afrikaanse inslag moes gehad het, maar hierdie tendens was nog glad nie duidelik toe die meeste bydraes geskryf is nie. 'n Breër Suid-Afrikaanse raamwerk sal doelbewus in die hersiening van hierdie werk nagestreef word. Die Afrikaanse bydraes word in hierdie digitale weergawe van die werk aangevul deur die lemmas uit die 2009-uitgawe van die Lexicon van literaire termen - die bekende en gesaghebbende naslaanwerk vir studente en navorsers in Afrikaans en Nederlands saamgestel deur H. van Gorp, R. Ghesquiere en D. Delabastita. Dit bied 'n breër Europese blik op die literatuurwetenskaplike vaktaal. Literêre terme en teorieë het oorspronklik in 1992 by HAUM-Literêr in Pretoria verskyn. Dit is sedert 2008 gedigitaliseer met toestemming van die kopiereghouer, Maskew-Miller Longman. Die teks van die 2007-uitgawe van Van Gorp et al. se Lexicon van literêre terme word ingesluit met die goedgunstige toestemming van die outeurs. In Storyscapes we listen carefully to what South African writers reveal about themselves and their relations to South African space since the democratic transition of 1994. One main focus is the power of stories to uncover contradictory processes and investments of identity and to point readers toward a more meaningful life. Another main focus is the complexities of the post-colonial understanding of South African land, landscape, and space. Space in relation to race, class, and gender identity figures prominently in analyses and comparisons of diverse South African texts, such as Breyten Breytenbach's Dog Heart, André Brink's Imaginings of Sand, as well as the important South African subgenre of the farm novel. Questions of black or hybrid identity are highlighted by confronting older texts with new ones by black and women writers such as A.H.M. Scholtz and E.K.M. Dido. These texts - and a number of Afrikaans texts that are less well-known in the English-speaking world - are set in the wider frameworks of postcolonial criticism and global issues of cultural identity.

Borders separate but also connect self and other, and literary texts not only enact these bordering processes, but form part of such processes. This book gestures towards a borderless world, stepping, as it were, with thousand-mile boots from south to north (even across the Atlantic), from South Africa to Scandinavia. It also shows how literary texts model and remodel borders and bordering processes in rich and meaningful local contexts. The essays assembled here analyse the crossing and negotiation of borders and boundaries in works by Nadine Gordimer, Ingrid Winterbach, Deneys Reitz, Janet Suzman, Marlene van Niekerk, A.S. Byatt, Thomas Harris, Frank A. Jenssen, Eben Venter, Antjie Krog, and others under different signs or conceptual points of attraction. These signs include a spiritual turn, eventfulness, self-understanding, ethnic and linguistic mobilization, performative chronotopes, the grotesque, the carceral, the rhetorical, and the interstitial. Crossing Borders, Dissolving Boundaries
