Die Auspragung und Kultivierung von Kritik ist ein Indiz fur die Aufgeklartheit von Kulturen. Zugleich ist sie ein wesentliches Element der Zukunftsfahigkeit von Gesellschaften und Lebensformen. Nicht nur im Westen, auch in China hat Kritik eine lange Geschichte. Sie ist die Triebkraft der chinesischen Philosophie, und sie hat in den Formen der Literatur- und der Historiographiekritik Poesie und Geschichtsschreibung begleitet. Sie hat als Kultur-, Traditions- und Quellenkritik das Verhaltnis Chinas zu seinen eigenen historischen Grundlagen beeinfl usst. Sie hat als Machtkritik das politische System herausgefordert und zugleich mit gepragt. Sie hat institutionell wie ausserinstitutionell ihre eigenen Formen und Traditionen gefunden und ist ihrerseits Gegenstand kritischer Reflexion geworden. Dieser Sammelband wirft ein Licht auf Stationen und Probleme kritischen Denkens in China vom Altertum bis in die Gegenwart. Seine Beitrage gehen zuruck auf eine Jahrestagung, die die Deutsche Vereinigung fur Chinastudien (DVCS) dem Thema widmete.

Konfuzius ist bis heute einer der bekanntesten und einflußreichsten Philosophen Chinas. Heiner Roetz führt in seinem Buch anschaulich in dessen ursprüngliche Lehre ein. The Mencius, attributed to the philosopher Mengzi (Lat. Mencius, ca. 370-290 BC), the "second Sage" of the Confucian school after its founder, is one of the most prominent of all Chinese classics, with a great impact on the historical development of Confucianism. Today, it serves as one of the determinants for positioning Confucianism in the modern world, and it is the most discussed Chinese philosophical text in the context of the search for universally valid ethical norms and democracy. The essays collected in this volume by scholars from Taiwan, Japan and Germany focus on various aspect of the reception of the work in East Asia from the Song-Dynasty to the present day. They call into mind the signifance of a thinker who according to Albert Schweitzer is "the most modern one of all thinkers of antiquity".

The Book of Mencius and Its Reception in China and Beyond

Confucian Ethics of the Axial Age describes the formative period of Chinese culture--the last centuries of the Zhou dynasty--as an early epoch of enlightenment. It comprehensively reconstructs the ethical discourse as thought gradually became emancipated from tradition and institutions. Rather than presenting a chronology of different thinkers and works, this book discusses the systematic aspects of moral philosophies. Based on original texts, Roetz focuses on filial piety; the conflict between the family and the state; the legitimating of the political order; the virtues of loyalty, friendship, and harmony; concepts of justice; the principle of humaneness and its different readings; the Golden Rule; the moral person; the autonomous self, motivation, decision and conscience; and various attempts to ground morality in religion, human nature, or reason. These topics are arranged in such a way that the genetic structure and the logical development of the moral reasoning becomes apparent. From this detached perspective, conventional morality is either rejected or critically reestablished under the restraint of new abstract and universal norms. This makes the Chinese developments part of the ancient worldwide movement of enlightenment of the axial age.

Nach einer personlich gehaltenen Einfuhrung zu Leben und Werk Helmut Martins konzentriert sich der Themenschwerpunkt des Bandes auf (auto-)biographische Fragestellungen in Literatur, Wissenschaft, Politik und Wirtschaft des traditionellen und des modernen Chinas. Die chinesische und taiwanesische Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts sind hierbei besonders ins Blickfeld geruckt.
