Die Beiträge dieses Bandes fragen im Kontext gesellschaftsanalytischer und gesellschaftspolitischer Analysen nach den Voraussetzungen und Perspektiven Sozialer Arbeit in heutigen gesellschaftlichen Konflikten und Kämpfen. Soziale Arbeit ist in diese Konflikte und Kämpfe eingebunden, da sie in besonderer Weise mit dem Verhältnis von Arbeitsindividuum und Gesellschaft, Prozessen von Gesellschaftsintegration wie auch „Normalisierungsstrategien“ befasst ist. Diese Auseinandersetzungen werden in den historischen und systematischen Überlegungen aufgegriffen mit dem Ziel, Positionsbestimmungen und Perspektiven für eine widerständig orientierte Soziale Arbeit, die an der Etablierung einer demokratischen Gesellschaft mitarbeitet, zu entwickeln.

For a long time, scientific knowledge on children and childhood was almost exclusively produced by educationalists and developmental psychologists. In recent years, however, a new approach originating in Europe was added: childhood sociology. This book introduces this approach by presenting a collection of essays from various European countries: France, Germany, Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Denmark. The articles cover a wide range of methodologies as well as subject areas in the field of childhood sociology, giving a picture of the life situation of contemporary children in Europe and arguing how childhood researchers can come to terms with new trends and facts of (post-)modern childhood.

Mit dieser Bezeichnung wird ein Spannungsverhältnis beschrieben: Wie können die vielfältigen Facetten und zentralen Zugänge in den wissenschaftlichen Diskursen zur Kindheitsforschung legitimiert werden? Zum einen wird die Untersuchung von Kindheiten in verschiedenen gesellschaftlichen Relationen, zum anderen die Analyse der gesellschaftlichen Bearbeitung dieses Verhältnisses vorgenommen. Der erste Band des Wuppertaler Forschungszentrums Kindheiten.Gesellschaften unternimmt eine kritische Bestandsaufnahme der aktuellen Zugänge zur neuen interdisziplinären Grundlegung der Kindheitsforschung. Kinder sind soziale Akteure. Daraus ergeben sich kinderpolitische wie kinderrechtliche Konsequenzen. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses stehen daher Fragen nach den hetero genen Lebenswelten von Kindern, ihren Entwicklungs mög lichkeiten und Bedingungen des Aufwachsens. Ob und wie ist in der Rede von Akteurskompetenz von Kindern eine ‚frühe’ Zuschreibung von Verantwortung für Konstitutionsprozesse des Sozialen und zugleich eine ‚Intensivierung’ von Schutz und Kontrolle zu sehen? ‚Neue’ Bedingungen der Verwertung von Subjektivität im Postfordismus gehen damit einher.

Given the catastrophic history of the 'short 20th century' (Hobsbawm), the crucial question facing the new millennium - all over the world - is that of the future social as well as political development. At the centre of our engagement with this question should lie reflections on participatory forms of democratisation in as many societies around the globe as possible, so as to make globalisation more than simply an economic theme. Such reflections - as the contributions in this book show - from this perspective would also examine the possible ways in which relations might be constituted within political socialisation, participation and education. These concepts are in turn to be explored in the substantive discussions of 'democracy' and 'democratisation' in relation to individuals as well as political systems. If educational policy is social policy, if a democratic society demands citizens who are educated and thus capable of political action, the themes 'Political Education' and 'Political Socialisation' need to be addressed anew, and this is equally important for a rethinking of the future of the 'political' more generally. The contributions to the book contribute to a challenging debate.

Es werden dabei sowohl theoretische als auch empirische Forschungsfelder und deren Ergebnisse vorgestellt sowie zusammengefasst. Das Aufwachsen von Kindern in der Dialektik von Abhängigkeit und Autonomie, von den ersten Lebensmonaten und -jahren hin zu relativ selbstständig handelnden Personen, rückt vor dem Hintergrund der sozialwissenschaftlich akzentuierten Ansätze in den ‚childhood studies‘ immer mehr in den Fokus von Forschung und der pädagogischen Ausbildung. Führen die medialen und digitalen Transformationen, wie sie insbesondere in spätmodernen kapitalistischen Gesellschaften in den letzten Jahren in rasanter Geschwindigkeit stattgefunden haben, auch zu fundamentalen Veränderungen kindlichen Lebens und Erlebens? Und falls ja, in welcher Weise und mit welchen Konsequenzen? Obwohl diese Fragen gesellschaftlich wie pädagogisch bedeutsam sind, wurden Veränderungen kindlicher Lebenswelten und Lebenslagen durch Technik in den Folgen für kindliche Subjektivität in der deutschsprachigen Kindheitsforschung bislang wenig untersucht. Das Handbuch gibt einen systematischen Überblick über zentrale Zusammenhänge und die interdisziplinär geführten Diskurse – ausgehend von Analysen zum Verhältnis von Gesellschaftsentwicklung, Technik und Digitalisierungsprozessen über Ergebnisse der Kindheitsforschung bis zu Fragen der Initiierung und Beförderung emanzipatorischer Bildungs- wie Lernprozesse.
