Mythen vermögen Gemeinschaften politischen Sinn und nationale Identität zu geben, sind aber genauso als "fundierende Erzählungen" zu verstehen, die einen bestehenden Status quo als Teil einer natur- oder gottgegebenen, gesetzten oder gesetzmäßigen Ordnung legitimieren. Mythenbildung ist demnach keine Sache grauer, vorgeschichtlicher Zeit. Die alten Abstammungs- und Staatsgründungsmythen lassen sich durchaus mit den modernen Mythen des Nationalstaats, der Revolution, des Fortschritts vergleichen, und so erweist sich Mythenbildung als überzeitliches Phänomen, das zum Gegenstand der Forschung geworden ist. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes reichen thematisch vom Altertum bis in die zweite Hälfte des 20. Jh. und orientieren sich auch an Nachbardisziplinen wie z.B. der Philosophie, Kunstgeschichte oder Ägyptologie.
