Rebellion, transgression, and scandals are the normal conditions of '68. According to recent historiography, however, the revolutionary promise of the student revolts was short-lived.The process of stabilization and the decline of political energies in the 1980s followed the utopian phase of 1968/69. Yet one promise of the politicized era appeared to persist through this history of decline - the idea of transgression.Across a number of essays, this book traces the afterlife and historization of the theorem of transgression in art, architecture, technology, music, and psychedelic practices of the 60s and 70s by looking at the objects, materials, and images that actually shaped the idea of transgression.The essays address for example, conceptions of radical architecture suggesting a whole new organization of society, the dissolution of boundaries between art and life in artistic practices, transgressions in music and festivals, and utopian visions of technological progress.The very objects of such far-reaching ideas are often ephemeral and of deteriorating material quality when visited in archives and museums today - yet they still function as repositories of time and as evocative physical objects. Die im Band versammelten Beiträge berühren sich unter verschiedenen Denkbildern der Konstellation: mit Walter Benjamin in der Anweisung für eine andere Lektüre, mit Adorno in einem Verfahren, das bislang nicht Gedachte zu einer lesbaren Figur zusammenzuschließen, oder mit Foucault in der Eröffnung eines kohärenten Beschreibungsgebietes für neue Konstellationen des Wissens. Das Spektrum des Nachdenkens über Konstellationen geht von keinem »System« aus, sondern belässt die Dinge in ihrer Disparatheit. Es werden Konstellationen in ihrer prozessualen Bewegung beschrieben.

Im Ersten Weltkrieg suchten die westlichen Demokratien ihre liberalen Errungenschaften gegen die Mittelmächte zu verteidigen. Der Krieg wurde jedoch zur elementaren Zäsur für das 20. Jahrhundert und wies voraus auf spätere totalitäre Gewaltexzesse. Die Autorinnen und Autoren beleuchten die vielfältigen Verwerfungen im Zeitraum von 1900 bis 1930: die politisch-räumliche und ethnische Neuordnung Europas, die daraus resultierenden gesellschaftlichen Umwälzungen auch über Europas Grenzen hinaus und die Neumodellierung von Identitäten. Denn die Schlachtfelder des "Großen Krieges" gerieten zu Geburtsstätten "neuer Menschen" - von Pazifisten wie emanzipierten Frauen, Bolschewisten wie Faschisten. Man erwartete nichts weniger als eine radikal umgestaltete Gesellschaft und einen historischen Zeitenbruch.

This work is a critical evaluation of the concepts of convention and innovation as applied in the study of changing literary values, hierarchies and canons. Two approaches are analyzed: (1) the linking of convention and the subject's awareness of convention, and (2) systems theory. The merits of both approaches are discussed and an attempt is made to combine them and to regard systems of literary communication primarily as systems of conventions. Specific cases of changing conventions and innovation are illustrated with examples from the field of versification (Rimbaud), reception studies (Puskin, Goethe, George Eliot), the dichotomy of forgetting/remembering (Nietzsche, Proust), avant-garde, the American dream, and popular genres assimilated in Postmodernism.

Wo ist Kultur? Was meinen wir, wenn wir "Kultur" sagen? Im 19. Jahrhundert hatte "Kultur" ihren Hort in Europa, ihre Heimat war das antike Griechenland und die sie tragende Schicht das Bürgertum. Die Umbrüche des 20. Jahrhunderts lassen keine feste Verortung von "Kultur" mehr zu. Dennoch (oder gerade deshalb?) ist "Kultur" in gegenwärtigen Debatten ein Schlüsselwort. Die komplexe Dynamik sozialer, wirtschaftlicher und medialer Prozesse erscheint letztlich nur "kulturell" erklärbar – ein Diskurs, der aktuell unterschiedlichste Positionen herausfordert. Der Band dokumentiert die interdisziplinäre Ringvorlesung von Universität und ETH Zürich, die der Frage nach dem Ort von Kultur nachgeht.
