"Weird Tales" was a treasure trove of Lost World-Lost Race gems. These types of tales are nothing new. This science fiction-fantasy sub-genre has been around forever, but it really took off in popularity in the latter half of the 19th Century. The works of authors like H. Rider Haggard, Arthur Conan Doyle, Edgar Rice Burroughs, A. Merritt, Ganpat, H. G. Wells, A. Hyatt Verrill, and Jules Verne are just a handful of the prominent authors who helped cement this genre in the public's mind from the mid-19th Century through the mid-20th Century. Most tales within this genre were novels, but there was also a plethora of shorter stories as well, and Weird Tales magazine was home to many of them. Here in this collection is a choice sampling of some of Weird Tales' many LWLR tales. Stories like "The Lure Of Atlantis," "White Man's Madness ," and "Teoquitla The Golden" are all fine examples of LWLR storytelling at its best.

Narrativa - racconto lungo (39 pagine) - Un racconto pubblicato soltanto dopo la morte di entrambi gli scrittori su Amazing Stories nel 1946, e nello stesso anno anche nella raccolta "West India Lights" di H.S. Whitehead dalla Arkham House. Le sillabe trascritte da Meredith non trovavano alcuna corrispondenza in nessuna lingua conosciuta, fosse essa antica o moderna. Non erano neppure giapponese. Una volta usciti i professori, Meredith e lo psichiatra si rimisero nuovamente a esaminare gli appunti. Meredith aveva scritto: “I, I, I, I;-R’ly-eh!-Ieh nya, -Ieh nya; -zoh, zoh-an-nuh!” Soltanto un gruppo di termini sembrava formare parte di un discorso continuo o una frase, fra quelli che Meredith era stato in grado di trascrivere: “Ióth, Ióth,—natcal-o, do yan kho thútthut.” In appendice la lettera in cui Lovecraft parla della collaborazione al racconto. Henry S. Whitehead nacque a Elizabeth, nel New Jersey, il 5 marzo 1882 e a 24 anni si laureò alla Harvard University, con Franklin D. Roosevelt. All'Università di Harvard diresse una rivista democratica e fu commissario di atletica leggera poi, nel 1912 divenne diacono. Dopo un breve servizio religioso a New York nella Chiesa di Santa Maria Vergine partì per le Isole Vergini ove dal 1921 al 1929, rivestì la carica di arcidiacono. Fu in quel periodo sull'isola di St. Croix che Whitehead raccolse il materiale che avrebbe usato nei suoi racconti del soprannaturale. Amico di H.P. Lovecraft, Whitehead pubblicò racconti dal 1924 in poi su varie riviste pulp come Adventure, Black Mask, Strange Tales, ma soprattutto su Weird Tales. Molti dei racconti di Whitehead sono ambientati nelle Isole Vergini e attingono alla storia e al folklore della zona. Dopo il peridio caraibico Whitehead si trasferì a Dunedin, in Florida, come rettore della Chiesa del Buon Pastore. H.P. Lovecraft nel 1931 andò a trovarlo in quel di Dunedin e rimase ospite a casa sua per diverse settimane in cui probabilmente i due scrissero alcuni racconti. Whitehead morì nel 1932, ma pochi dei suoi lettori lo seppero fino a quando un annuncio e una breve biografia scritta da H.P. Lovecraft, non apparvero sul numero di marzo 1933 di Weird Tales. Whitehead ebbe il merito principale di introdurre il vudù nella cultura popolare, attraverso i suoi racconti. Lovecraft nel suo In Memoriam: Henry St. Clair Whitehead espresse viva ammirazione per i suoi testi, descrivendoli come “racconti weird sottili, realistici e silenziosamente potenti”. Howard Phillips Lovecraft è il padre più famoso del genere weird. Nato a Providence il 20 agosto del 1890 e morto a Providence il 15 marzo del 1937 ebbe una vita breve che qui, è impossibile riassumere, compito altrettanto improbo è elencare le sue opere che ancor oggi influenzano gli scrittori horror occidentali. Il Richiamo di Cthulhu, Dagon o Ombre su Innsmouth sono i racconti più aderenti a questa collana, ma molti altri suoi capolavori – come Il Caso di Charles Dexter Ward, Il Modello di Pickman, La Dichiarazione di Randolph, Alle Montagne della Follia e L’orrore di Dunwich — sono considerati classici ineguagliati.
