Sometimes art is also a political gesture of historical significance. In the case of Reims Cathedral, the crown jewel of French sacred architecture, this statement can be affirmed without a doubt. Heavily damaged in 1914 by German troops, the cathedral was presented with three new stained glass windows by the painter and installation artist Imi Knoebel (*1940 in Dessau), representing a gift from Germany to France. Knoebel is a "Minimal" artist who, in celebration of the cathedral's 800th anniversary, illuminated the choir space in 2011 with his six stained glass windows. Since then, he has continued his work in the sacred sphere. He spent three years in an intensive examination of the interiors of the Jeanne D'Arc Chapel. The resulting combinations of luminous colors inside the High Gothic architecture are harmonious and poignant. This publication sheds light on the process of producing glass façades and documents their creation, from the first sketch to the ultimate installation at Reims Cathedral.

Galileo’s O, Volume III, is perhaps without peer in the history of the book. In this work, historians in various fields revise the results they presented in the first two volumes, which focused on the New York copy of Sidereus Nuncius, written in 1610. The analysis of this book was conceived as a uniquely multidisciplinary and cooperative undertaking, and many of its findings remain valid. Yet the subject of analysis proved to be the work of an international group of forgers. Volume III describes the chronology and methods by which the discovery of forgery was made – a veritable watershed moment in the continuing struggle between the ever-more refined methods of forgers and new methods used to apprehend them. Ultimately, the work also provides insight into the psychology of specialists who “research themselves” in order to prevent similar errors in the future.

Drawing on a close dialogue between the histories of art, science, and technology, The Technical Image explores these images not as mere illustrations or examples, but as productive agents and distinctive, multilayered elements of the process of generating knowledge. Using beautifully reproduced visuals, this book not only reveals how scientific images play a constructive role in shaping the findings and insights they illustrate, but also—however mechanical or detached from individual researchers’ choices their appearances may be—how they come to embody the styles of a period, a mindset, a research collective, or a device. Opening with a set of key questions about artistic representation in science, technology, and medicine, The Technical Image then investigates historical case studies focusing on specific images, such as James Watson’s models of genes, drawings of Darwin’s finches, and images of early modern musical automata. Horst Bredekamp’s subject is the astute deployment and perennial resonance of the startling image of the body politic that dominates the frontispiece to Leviathan: a treatise on the psychology of the individual and the dynamic of the multitude, published in 1651 by the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes. Affirming the centrality of such a figural device for this pioneering theorist of the state, Bredekamp goes on to address the art-historical dimension of the mesmerising etched title-page. In his central chapters he explores the extraordinary range of sources – from socio-cultural tradition to scientific advances – on which the author and his artist-collaborator may have drawn. In conclusion, he reveals Hobbes to be no less passionate than shrewd in his belief that the constraints and amenities of a tolerable life in common attest to the potency of the visual. As appendices, two essays and catalogues explore the portraits made of Hobbes as well as illustrations that appeared in his other works, thus systematically completing the exploration of the images connected with this exceptional philosopher.

By contrast, Image Acts focuses on the counterforce of the form of images. The book subdivides this sphere into three parts: imitation, substitution, and the pure effect of the form. All three parts are contemplated with examples from antiquity through to the present and the iconoclastic controversies of our times. From this reconstruction of the image act springs the element of a new philosophy of affordance.

Der erste Band des Kunsthistorischen Jahrbuches "Bildwelten des Wissens" gilt jenen Bildern, die in Prozessen ihre Gültigkeit haben. Gemeint sind sowohl Erkenntnis- als auch Arbeitsprozesse und Laborpraktiken, aber auch prozessuale Entwicklungen von Bildgegenständen. Mit dieser Zuspitzung soll die im Jahrbuch zu führende Debatte um Bilder als Wissensobjekte, die sich nicht allein im Illustrativen erschöpfen, eröffnet werden. Bei der Vorstellung, dass Bilder den Gegenstand, und nicht zunächst sich selbst abbilden, wird leicht übersehen, dass Darstellungen eben nicht nur vorgängig Gedachtes bloß wiedergeben, sondern mit ihren eigenen Mitteln Wissen zugleich auch herstellen.

To this day Charles Darwin’s evolutionary theory of the "survival of the fittest" has been visualized with the universal model of a tree of life. But early on in Darwin’s thinking the coral provided a fascinating alternative to the tree as a depiction of the evolution of the species. Horst Bredekamp shows how Darwin, a coral enthusiast and collector, found in it a more adequate illustration of evolution through natural selection: It grows anarchically in all directions and no longer upholds mankind as the "crown of creation." Using this example Darwin is proving himself to be both a destroyer and consummator of traditional natural philosophy. Since antiquity the coral had been a symbol of nature as a whole.

Contemporary biographies of Galilei emphasize, in several places, that he was a masterful draughtsman. In fact, Galilei studied at the art academy, which is where his friendship with Ludovico Cigoli developed, who later became the official court artist. The book focuses on this formative effect – it tracks Galilei’s trust in the epistemological strength of drawings. It also looks at Galilei’s activities in the world of art and his reflections on art theory, ending with an appreciation of his fame; after all, he was revered as a rebirth of Michelangelo. For the first time, this publication collects all aspects of the appreciation of Galilei as an artist, contemplating his art not only as another facet of his activities, but as an essential element of his research.

Bilder des Himmels und des Weltalls, von den ersten Sternwarten bis zu aktuellen Aufnahmen vom Mars, markieren jenen spannungsvollen Grenzverlauf zwischen künstlerischer und wissenschaftlicher Imagination, der gerade in dem Versuch, das Ungreifbare greifbar zu machen, starke Bildtraditionen ausgeprägt hat. Um himmlischer Phänomene, die der direkten Wahrnehmung prinzipiell entzogen sind, in Form von Bildern habhaft zu werden, wurden und werden die unterschiedlichsten Instrumente aufgeboten. Eine besondere Herausforderung stellt dabei die Gesamterfassung des Himmels und seiner Gestirne dar, die dem Auge in unendlicher Ausdehnung, Fülle und Unordnung erscheinen. In Galileis Beobachtung des Mondes nicht anders als in den zeitgenössischen Bildwelten der Astrophysik werden damit auch die Möglichkeiten bildlicher Repräsentation selbst immer neu ausgelotet. Der Band stellt ein paradigmatisches Gebiet formaler und historischer Bildkritik vor, indem er Handzeichnungen, Druckgrafiken und Fotografien, Datenmengen wie Simulationen als anschauliches Resultat der Auswertung des Unendlichen einschließt – als Imagination des Himmels, in der Erkenntnis und Faszination nicht voneinander zu trennen sind.

Pourquoi Thomas Hobbes ne peut-il penser l'État sans en créer une image ? Cette question est au cœur de l'étude que Horst Bredekamp consacre à l'un des frontispices les plus connus et les plus énigmatiques de l'édition moderne : Le Léviathan. L'auteur retrace ici la genèse des images et des sources variées dans lesquelles Hobbes a puisé, transposant l'iconographie en pensée. Théories optiques, traditions rhétoriques et hermétiques confluent ainsi dans la représentation d'un État-monstre qui s'élève pour nous dominer. Plus encore, nous découvrons comment, à travers la publication de ses portraits, le philosophe s'est préoccupé tout au long de sa vie de forger et de promouvoir sa propre image. Um sich selbst zu bändigen, muß er folglich einen künstlichen Riesen schaffen, den Staat, der als übergeordnete Instanz den permanenten Bürgerkrieg zu unterdrücken und Frieden zu schaffen vermag. Diese Essenz von Thomas Hobbes'"Leviathan" ist bis heute ebenso vehement verworfen wie bekräftigt worden. In den letzten Jahrzehnten wurden vor allem die historischen Bedingungen erschlossen, unter denen Hobbes sein epochales Werk verfaßte; aber seine bestürzende Grundthese, daß es des Schreckens bedarf, um inneren Frieden zu erzeugen, ist eine Herausforderung für jedwede Staats- und Gesellschaftstheorie geblieben. Zu den Mitteln, mit denen der Leviathan die Menschen vom Unfrieden abhält, gehören Bilder, und aus diesem Grund steht dem Leviathan ein Frontispiz voran. Obwohl seit Jahrhunderten selbst entfernteste Aspekte von Hobbes' Werk ausgeleuchtet wurden, ist dieses grundlegende Element seiner Lehre bislang nicht erörtert worden. Eine systematische Untersuchung seiner Wertschätzung des Augensinnes fehlt ebenso wie eine umfassende Analyse seiner Bildmittel. Horst Bredekamp erschließt mit Abraham Bosse den Künstler des Frontispizes, stellt sämtliche Varianten dieses Urbildes des modernen Staates zusammen und versucht, die Vorgeschichte seiner politischen Ikonographie zu klären. Im Zentrum stehen die königlichen Kunstleiber von Westminster Abbey sowie optische Geräte, mit deren Hilfe Hobbes neben dem Körper und dem Raum auch eine künstliche Zeit als Wirkmittel des Leviathan zu etablieren suchte. Gegen Ende seiner prägnanten Analyse erörtert der Autor die Wiederkehr der Hobbesschen Staatsikone im neunzehnten und zwanzigsten Jahrhundert sowie die Zukunft des Staates als Bild.
