Hume Nisbet

James Hume Nisbet was born in Stirling, Scotland, arriving in Melbourne at the age of sixteen where he became involved in theatrical life. He returned to Britain to study art, and went on to teach and exhibit in Edinburgh. He became a prolific book illustrator, and was later commissioned by Cassell and Co. to visit Australia and New Guinea, contributing articles and sketches for Cassell's Picturesque Australasia (1887-89). Nisbet published seventeen novels, many of which were set in and around Australia and the Pacific. The first, The Land of the Hibiscus Blossom: a yarn of the Papuan Gulf, was published in 1888 and then republished ten years later as part of Heinemann's Colonial Library of Popular Fiction. Nisbet's fiction in fact covered a range of popular genres, including romance, colonial adventure and crime. His autobiographical writings included A Colonial Tramp: Travels and Adventures in Australia and New Guinea (1891) and Reminiscences of Early Australian Life (1893). (less)

James Hume Nisbet (1849 -1923) was a Scottish-born novelist and artist. Many of his thrillers are set in Australia. Nisbet devoted most of his time to writing. He produced many volumes of verse, books on art and fiction. Several of his novels are coloured by his Australian experiences and appear to have had some success. Miller in his Australian Literature lists about 40 novels published between 1888 and 1905. During the next 10 years he published a few more books, including Hathor and Other Poems, which appeared as the first volume of his poetic and dramatic works in 1905. There was another edition in 1908. Many of Nisbet's volumes were of ghost stories. These include Paths of the Dead (1899), Stories Weird and Wonderful (1900), and The Haunted Station (1894) .

Hume Nisbet was a painter, illustrator, and author. He was born in Stirling, and he studied art under Sam Bough. From the age of sixteen he spent seven years exploring Australia and was appointed on his return to the position of Master of the Watt College of Art and Old Schools of Art, Edinburgh. In 1885 he was sent by Cassell & Co, to New Guinea, and in 1905-6 he visited China and Japan. In the later part of his life he concentrated on writing novels. He was the father of the artist Noel Laura Nisbet.
