De retour à Séoul, ils se retrouvent avec leurs amis au café Mozart. Chun et la jeune Mia entament une relation amoureuse qui les entraîne vers l'île de Cheju. Mais Chun, arrêté pour avoir manifesté, rencontre un trimardeur, " Lieutenant ", avec qui il part travailler sur des chantiers et en mer.
L'Étoile du chien qui attend son repas est un tumultueux périple initiatique à plusieurs voix, largement autobiographique, qui se termine par le départ de Chun pour le Viêt Nam et une guerre qui n'est pas la sienne. Un subtil portrait de la jeunesse coréenne, semblable par bien des aspects à celles de tous les pays, de toutes les époques. Et une méditation sur le sens à donner à sa vie au lieu de suivre des chemins tout tracés par les aînés.

Né en 1943 en Mandchourie, Hwang Sok-yong traverse l'histoire contemporaine de la Corée. Sa lutte contre la dictature et sa volonté de faire un pas vers la Corée du Nord le mènent en exil puis en prison. Il est l'auteur de La Route de Sampo, L'Invité, Shim Chong, fille vendue, Le Vieux Jardin ou Princesse Bari, traduits en de nombreuses langues et adaptés au cinéma.
