The third “branch” of Jacques Roubaud's epic, Proustian Great Fire of London, Mathématique: is also an excellent entrance into the series. Adopting math as a career relatively late in his studies, Roubaud here narrates his difficulties both personal and pedagogical, while also investigating the role of mathematics in his life as a remedy to all the messiness of lived experience. “I sought out arithmetic,” he writes, “to protect myself. But from what? At the time, I would probably have replied: from vagueness, from a lack of rigor, from 'literature.'” But mathematics also provide a refuge from human fears, and from coping, eventually, with tragedies like the death of his wife Alix. As with the previous volumes of The Great Fire of London, Mathématique: is a riveting and humorous anecdotal memoir as well as a fiendishly digressive fiction about the functions of memory and the written word.

L’ambition de Ian Monk est de relever une réalité qu’il connaît de près, peu représentée dans la production littéraire d’aujourd’hui, et encore moins dans la poésie : le quotidien ni particulièrement spectaculaire ni particulièrement reluisant d’un quartier populaire de la périphérie lilloise. Il ne craint ni le prosaïsme des situations ni la crudité du langage : nourri de choses vues et entendues, ce texte n’enjolive pas. Pour le décor : des rues où se succèdent kebabs et centres de téléphonie discount, des parkings de supermarchés, les bars tabacs, les appartements HLM... Familles déglinguées, télévision, alcool, ennui, violence sont les constantes de cet univers. Par son humour, forcément grinçant, le poème échappe cependant au misérabilisme. On reconnaîtrait plutôt à l’auteur une forme d’humanisme lucide. Suite poétique rigoureusement organisée, onze parties composées chacune de x poèmes de x2 vers de x mots allant d’un (donc une section d’un seul mot) jusqu’à onze (donc 11 poèmes de 121 vers de 11 mots), Plouk Town contient bien d’autres contraintes formelles, qui contribuent à donner au texte son rythme, son souffle. Mais Plouk Town n’est en aucun cas réductible à une suite d’exercices de style. Il s’agit au contraire de réaffirmer la possibilité pour la poésie de parler de tout et d’assumer une dimension narrative, tout en se tenant à une stricte construction formelle. Le texte d’introduction de Jacques Roubaud, Ian Monk traverse le Channel, est plutôt irrévérencieux, et fait écho aux thèmes du poème avec une ironie mordante.
