Die Transplantationschirurgie wirft - bei all ihren Erfolgen - juristische, bioethische und philosophische Fragen auf und provoziert kollektive Hoffnungen, Phantasien und Ängste, die sich in Literatur und Film niederschlagen. Zugleich können literarische Texte und Filme das Thema neu konturieren und dabei eigenständige künstlerische Formen entwickeln. Irmela Marei Krüger-Fürhoffs Studie untersucht Sujet und Verfahren der Transplantation in Fiktion und Wissenschaft und betritt damit literaturwissenschaftliches und kulturwissenschaftliches Neuland. Auf der Grundlage von 90 literarischen Texten und 40 Filmen aus dem deutschen, englischen und französischen Sprachraum rekonstruiert sie die kulturellen Repräsentationen der Transplantationsmedizin vom 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart. Die Monographie analysiert, wie Literatur und Film an der Konstruktion, kritischen Reflexion, aber auch Durchsetzung von medizinischem Wissen und Handeln beteiligt sind. Ein besonderes Interesse gilt dabei den narrativen und ästhetischen Inszenierungen, die für die Darstellung von 'Verpflanzungen' als chirurgisch-immunologisches, wissens-historisches und rhetorisches Verfahren eingesetzt werden.

Memory loss is not always viewed purely as a contingent neurobiological process present in an ageing population; rather, it is frequently related to larger societal issues and political debates. This edited volume examines how different media and genres – novels, auto/biographical writings, documentary as well as fictional films and graphic memoirs – represent dementia for the sake of critical explorations of memory, trauma and contested truths. In ten analytical chapters and one piece of graphic art, the contributors examine the ways in which what might seem to be the individual, ahistorical diseases of dementia are used in contemporary cultural texts to represent and respond to violent historical and political events – ranging from the Holocaust to postcolonial conditions – all of which can prove difficult to remember. Combining approaches from literary studies with insights from memory studies, trauma studies, anthropology, the critical medical humanities and media, film and comics studies, this volume explores the politics of dementia and incites new debates on cultures of remembrance, while remaining attentive to the lived reality of dementia.

Culturally powerful ideas of normalcy and deviation, individual responsibility, and what is medically feasible shape the ways in which we live with illness and disability. The essays in this volume show how illness narratives expressed in a variety of forms—biographical essays, fictional texts, cartoons, graphic novels, and comics—reflect on and grapple with the fact that these human experiences are socially embedded and culturally shaped. Works of fiction addressing the impact of an illness or disability; autobiographies and memoirs exploring an experience of medical treatment; and comics that portray illness or disability from the perspective of patient, family member, or caregiver: all of these narratives forge a specific aesthetic in order to communicate their understanding of the human condition. This collection demonstrates what can emerge when scholars and artists interested in fiction, life-writing, and comics collaborate to explore how various media portray illness, medical treatment, and disability. Rather than stopping at the limits of genre or medium, the essays talk across fields, exploring together how works in these different forms craft narratives and aesthetics to negotiate contention and build community around those experiences and to discover how the knowledge and experiences of illness and disability circulate within the realms of medicine, art, the personal, and the cultural. Ultimately, they demonstrate a common purpose: to examine the ways comics and literary texts build an audience and galvanize not just empathy but also action. Wer den Klassizismus vor allem mit Schlagworten wie 'Harmonie' und 'schöne Ganzheit' verbindet, der übersieht, daß das Schönheitsideal dieser Epoche vom Phantasma der Verletzung durchdrungen ist. Irmela Marei Krüger-Fürhoff revidiert in ihrer Studie das klassizistische Schönheitsideal, indem sie nachweist, daß der versehrte Körper zugleich als ausgeschlossenes und konstitutives Moment von Literatur und Ästhetik um 1800 verstanden werden muß. Mit dem Begriff der Versehrung greift sie auf ein historisches Wortfeld zurück, das im späten 18. Jahrhundert das Spektrum von der leichten Hautritzung bis zur tödlichen Verwundung umfaßt, aber auch die Zerstörung sexueller Integrität bezeichnet. Im Mittelpunkt der Studie steht die Relektüre kanonisierter Texte, in denen versehrte Körper zur Sprache kommen - von Winckelmann, Lessing, Herder und Goethe bis zu Moritz, Kleist, Günderrode und Arnim. Um die Verbindung zwischen einer Poetik der Verwundung und einer Geschichte gewaltsam geöffneter Körper zu zeigen, werden Literatur und Kunsttheorie mit anderen Diskursen des späten 18. und frühen 19. Jahrhunderts konfrontiert: mit Schlachtberichten der Befreiungskriege, gerichtsmedizinischen Untersuchungen und populären Reiseführern sowie mit antiken Skulpturen, zeitgenössischen Radierungen, Wachstableaus und anatomischen Modellen. Auf diese Weise werden literaturwissenschaftliche und kulturwissenschaftliche Perspektiven zu einem luziden Beitrag zu aktuellen Debatten in Germanistik, Ästhetiktheorie, Körpergeschichte und Gender Studies verknüpft. Es zeigt sich, daß der ausgegrenzte versehrte Körper zur zentralen Herausforderung, ja zum übersehenen oder verdrängten Ursprung der klassizistischen Ganzheitsästhetik wird.
