De jonge Henry Lee wordt door zijn vader naar een witte school in een witte wijk van Seattle gestuurd, omdat hij 'Amerikaan moet worden'. Maar het is 1942, en sinds de Japanse aanval op Pearl Harbor is iedereen van Aziatische komaf even verdacht. Henry wordt op school gepest en buitengesloten. Ruim veertig jaar later ziet Henry op het nieuws dat in het Panama Hotel, waar vroeger de Japanse wijk begon, een ontdekking is gedaan. In de kelder zijn spullen gevonden van Japanse families die ze daar hadden opgeslagen voor zij weggevoerd werden. Onder de voorwerpen bevindt zich een bamboeparasol, beschilderd met oranje vissen. Met een schok realiseert Henry zich dat die van Keiko was. Herinneringen aan hun tijd samen komen boven, en Henry begint te hopen dat het verleden misschien nog een tweede kans biedt...
