Ce livre publié en 1960, quelle qu'en soit la valeur intrinsèque et il n'est pas sans mérites, constitue un phénomène sociologique non négligeable puisqu'il a provoqué en pays cartésien une vogue considérable pour l'imaginaire, l'irrationnel et l'étrange. Sous la forme d'un essai captivant poursuivi par la revue ##Planète## qui en est issu, "rien de ce qui est étrange ne leur fut étranger". Secrets perdus, futurs antérieurs, civilisations disparues, récurrences insolites, littérature fantastique, histoire parallèle, religions occultes, problèmes contemporains revus sous l'angle de la Tradition ésotérique... tout concourt en ce livre à nous fasciner et surtout à nous éveiller à l'extra-ordinaire.
