Kelly usa appunto questo riferimento storico come metafora per raccontarci una vicenda di colonizzazione spaziale ambientata in un lontano futuro, non molto dissimile come stile dal divertente Dividere la trama. L’umanità ha inviato numerose astronavi, dotate di teletrasporto per i passeggeri, in giro per la galassia a scovare pianeti abitabili, e le sue genti si sono sparse ovunque, portando con sé la diversità delle culture tipiche della nostra razza. Adel Ranger Santos è un giovane abitante di un remoto mondo rurale, vincitore di un concorso letterario/religioso che gli ha permesso una visita a bordo della Godspeed, la più antica delle Soglie in giro per l’universo, dove incontrerà e farà amicizia con altri bizzarri passeggeri dell’astronave. La sua vicenda, e quella degli altri coloni alle prese con le strane anomalie della Godspeed è tuttavia lo spunto non solo per una serie di vorticose avventure ma anche per una interessante serie di speculazioni religiose e filosofiche sull’evoluzione dell’umanità e sulla sua imprescindibile necessità di credere in una divinità di qualche tipo, sia essa una forma di Cristo Redentore sia un Alieno imperscrutabile e misterioso. Né va dimenticato l’inevitabile confronto e parallelo con uno dei testi più noti della fantascienza, quel 2001: Odissea nello spazio di Kubrick/Clarke, che certo è rimasto nelle menti di tutti gli appassionati del genere. In definitiva, un testo da non perdere. James Patrick Kelly, nato a Mineola, New York, nel 1951, è uno dei migliori autori della fantascienza moderna. È noto in Italia soprattutto per la sua narrativa breve, ed è stato infatti più volte ospitato nelle antologie dei migliori racconti dell’anno curate da Gardner Dozois e da David Hartwell. Delos Books ha pubblicato il suo romanzo L’utopia di Walden (Odissea Fantascienza 23, 2008), incentrato sulle teorie di Henry David Thoreau e vincitore di un premio Nebula. Kelly è un pezzo di storia della fantascienza: era già presente nella leggendaria antologia Mirrorshades curata da Gibson e Sterling, ha vinto, oltre al Nebula già citato, anche due volte il premio Hugo per il miglior racconto (nel 1996 per l’ormai classico Think like a Dinosaur e nel 2000 per 1016 to 1). In tempi recenti ha curato con John Kessel alcune antologie che offrono una carrellata delle ultimissime tendenze del genere, quali lo slipstream e il post-cyberpunk.
