Teddy

A playful allegory about why misery exists in the world, and always will. They call her Old Misery, and for good reason, too. She’s got nothing to call her own except her cat and her apple tree, which would be something if it weren’t for all the stealing! Every day she hobbles up and down the hill to shoo away the apple thieves. So when an unexpected visitor grants her a wish in exchange for a meal, Old Misery wishes that anyone who tries to steal an apple will get stuck in her tree until she lets them go. And it does the trick — for a while — until she tries to make a deal with another surprise visitor, and learns the most miserable lesson of all: be careful what you wish for!

The story centres on three farmers, each of whom thinks that his cornfield is the best until there is a plague of mice. Mice catching machines are constructed but in the end the solution lies in 'Fat Cat', a cat with attitude! This story is easy to read and the illustrations alone will motivate class discussion.

When Swanda and her dog, Waldo, move to Brooklyn from the country, they miss the wildlife they left behind. Until they discover the pigeons. “Oh, look! What dear little birds! Come, Waldo, we’ll get them a bird feeder all their own.” But a bird feeder in the city attracts lots and lots and lots of birds — and the neighbors don’t like them, or their mess, one bit. So when Swanda is unable to fix things, her neighbors step in with their own Brooklynese solution: “SWANDA, YOU GOTTA STOP FEEDIN’ DA BOIDS!”
