Since the early 1960s, James Turrell has used light and space as his primary mediums. His site-specific artworks, from the ambitious and on-going Roden Crater, a natural cinder volcano situated in the Arizona desert which Turrell is transforming into a naked-eye observatory, to his Skyspace series, make manifest the physical presence of light and heighten the viewer's visual perception. This unique, limited edition, case-bound publication, signed by the artist, printed on archival paper, and with 14 individual color plates suitable for framing, provides an overview of both of these projects as well as Turrell's room-size light works in which forms seem to float in air and spaces gradually fill with mysterious light. The color and materials used to fabricate James Turrell: Infinite Light reflect the natural texture and palette of Roden Crater, and iconic symbols related to the crater's underground chambers are embossed and die-cut into the folios of each section.

August 1999 konzipierte Turrell im äussersten Südosten Cornwalls zwei Wahrnehmungsräume: einen "Skyspace" mit dem Titel "The Elliptic Ecliptic", den er auf einem Hang gegenüber von St. Michael's Mount errichtete, und die "Shallow Space Construction" in der Newlyn Art Gallery mit dem Namen "Arcus". Fotografien von James Turrell und Fotogravüren des amerikanischen Fotografen Thomas Joshua Cooper dokumentieren die jüngste Arbeit des Amerikaners. James Turrell (*1943 inLos Angeles) is undoubtedly the most influential contemporary light artist. His entire oeuvre is dedicated to the exploration of the many facets of natural and artificial light. In his work, light and space become experiential processes, reflecting the basic conditions of aesthetic perception.At the center of this book is a group of works, Sky Spaces, which have become an art form in their own right, developed by Turrell over the course of his career. Academic, philosophical, and art-historical essays explain the development and significance of these perceptual spaces, whose concept is closely bound to the creation of the Roden Crater Project in the Arizona desert, where the artist began erecting an observatory in 1974. Examples of his work are used to explain the meaning of these light spaces to contemporary art. Also included is the latest installation, Skyspace/Camera Obscura Space, which Turrell conceived for the Zentrum für Internationale Lichtkunst in Unna. For more than forty-five years, Turrell has explored the myriad possibilities of using light as a medium of perception. His formally simple works draw attention to the limits of seeing, while seeking to expand the wordless thought that they provoke. Throughout these permutations, the light that is normally used to illuminate other objects is assigned form and structure, making it the subject of the revelation. He continues to use light as his primary subject and material, with its inherent allusions to painting and sculpture. Scholar Miwon Kwon has contributed an insightful essay to the publication, which features a biography and exhibition history.
