The programming language Python was conceived in the late 1980s, [1] and its implementation was started in December 1989[2] by Guido van Rossum at CWI in the Netherlands as a successor to the ABC (programming language) capable of exception handling and interfacing with the Amoeba operating system.[3] Van Rossum is Python's principal author, and his continuing central role in deciding the direction of Python is reflected in the title given to him by the Python community, Benevolent Dictator for Life (BDFL).[4][5] Python was named for the BBC TV show Monty Python's Flying Circus.[6] Python 2.0 was released on October 16, 2000, with many major new features, including a cycle-detecting garbage collector (in addition to reference counting) for memory management and support for Unicode. However, the most important change was to the development process itself, with a shift to a more transparent and community-backed process.[7] Python 3.0, a major, backwards-incompatible release, was released on December 3, 2008[8] after a long period of testing. Many of its major features have also been backported to the backwards-compatible Python 2.6 and 2.7.[9] In February 1991, van Rossum published the code (labeled version 0.9.0) to alt.sources.[10] Already present at this stage in development were classes with inheritance, exception handling, functions, and the core datatypes of list, dict, str and so on. Also in this initial release was a module system borrowed from Modula-3; Van Rossum describes the module as "one of Python's major programming units."[1] Python's exception model also resembles Modula-3's, with the addition of an else clause.[3] In 1994 comp.lang.python, the primary discussion forum for Python, was formed, marking a milestone in the growth of Python's userbase.[1] Python reached version 1.0 in January 1994. The major new features included in this release were the functional programming tools lambda, map, filter and reduce. Van Rossum stated that "Python acquired lambda, reduce(), filter() and map(), courtesy of a Lisp hacker who missed them and submitted working patches."[11] The last version released while Van Rossum was at CWI was Python 1.2. In 1995, Van Rossum continued his work on Python at the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI) in Reston, Virginia whence he released several versions. By version 1.4, Python had acquired several new features. Notable among these are the Modula-3 inspired keyword arguments (which are also similar to Common Lisp's keyword arguments) and built-in support for complex numbers. Also included is a basic form of data hiding by name mangling, though this is easily bypassed.[12] During Van Rossum's stay at CNRI, he launched the Computer Programming for Everybody (CP4E) initiative, intending to make programming more accessible to more people, with a basic "literacy" in programming languages, similar to the basic English literacy and mathematics skills required by most employers. Python served a central role in this: because of its focus on clean syntax, it was already suitable, and CP4E's goals bore similarities to its predecessor, ABC. His life falls naturally into three periods, each of which singularly enough constitutes a distinct and important era in the history of Florence. His youth was concurrent with the greatness of Florence as an Italian power under the guidance of Lorenzo de' Medici, Il Magnifico. The downfall of the Medici in Florence occurred in 1494, in which year Machiavelli entered the public service. During his official career Florence was free under the government of a Republic, which lasted until 1512, when the Medici returned to power, and Machiavelli lost his office. The Medici again ruled Florence from 1512 until 1527, when they were once more driven out. This was the period of Machiavelli's literary activity and increasing influence; but he died, within a few weeks of the expulsion of the Medici, on 22nd June 1527, in his fifty-eighth year, without having regained office.

Sleeping Beauties (Novel) Sleeping Beauties is a novel by American writers Stephen King and his son Owen King, released on September 26, 2017. The book was first mentioned during a promotional appearance on Q, a CBC Radio program, based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Of the novel, Stephen King stated, "Owen brought me this dynamite idea and I've collaborated a couple of times with Joe. I'm not going to say what the idea is because it's too good."[1] The novel was officially announced in June 2016 and is said to take place in a women's prison in West Virginia during a strange mystical occurrence that causes all the women in the world to fall asleep.[2] An excerpt was published on September 1, 2017 by Entertainment Weekly in their special The Ultimate Guide to Stephen King issue.[3] Synopsis The novel primarily follows Clint and Lila Norcross, a husband and wife who live in Dooling, West Virginia, a small, poor Appalachian town in the United States. Clint works as a psychiatrist at the local women's prison while Lila serves as the town's sheriff. The two find themselves facing a strange epidemic that causes women to fall into a deep sleep where they are cocooned in a strange material. Attempts to open the cocoon and wake the women only result in the women reacting in a homicidal manner. As a result the remaining women try desperately to remain awake by any means necessary while some men react by trying to set fire to the cocoons or accusing women of bringing the sleeping sickness upon themselves. One woman, Eve, seems to be the key to the entire strange affair. Of all the benefits a father can give his son, near the top must be a co-written novel. Also placing the name Stephen King on the cover guarantees a best-seller. King followers who read "Sleeping Beauties" may be disappointed because the book misses the page-turning intensity in so many of his classics. The couple started with an intriguing proposition: What if men and women become separated into two different worlds? How would the men react? Would the female society be more kind, gentle? These are questions that would merit a 700-page book, although the novel's answers to both incompletely. The plot seems simple. One day all the females in the world get sheltered up in cocoons as soon as they fall asleep. If any attempt to wake them up happens, they turn into feral beasts and don't hesitate to kill their loved ones. As some women realize this, they do whatever they cannot to sleep, using anything from coffee to cocaine. Most men react in expected ways, stealing, boozing, and arguing over if they should murder a mysterious woman who calls herself Evie who is the only female who can sleep and wake up. The book starts with Evie emerging from a tree trunk in a cloud of moths. A fascinating character who is a supernatural individual. She was sent to Earth, the novel explains, but by whom? And why? The writers let those questions remain instead focus on the men who want to kill Evie and the ones who want to save her. The action develops around a women's prison in Appalachia. Every inmate has a story and a reason to wake up or stay in the female world they enter when they sleep. There are several examples of why men are not good and women would be better off without them, and then there's a male hero, prison psychiatrist Clint Norcross. Who can't seem to articulate why, but he believes that Evie needs to be protected, so he and sympathizers in prison and prepares to battle with the men outside. Television Adaptation In April 2017, Deadline.com reported that Anonymous Content had purchased the television rights to the novel.[4]

I am indebted to chance for having directed me to the interest of book-burning as an episode in the history of the world's manners, the discursive allusions to it in the old numbers of "Notes and Queries" hinting to me the desirability of a more systematic mode of treatment. To bibliographers and literary historians I conceived that such a work might prove of utility and interest, and possibly serve to others as an introduction and incentive to a branch of our literary history that is not without its fascination. But I must also own to a less unselfish motive, for I imagined that not without its reward of delight would be a temporary sojourn among the books which, for their boldness of utterance or unconventional opinions, were not only not received by the best literary society of their day, but were with ignominy expelled from it. Nor was I wrong in my calculation. But could I impart or convey the same delight to others? Clearly all that I could do was to invite them to enter on the same road, myself only subserving the humble functions of a signpost. I could avoid merely compiling for them a bibliographical dictionary, but I could not treat at length of each offender in my catalogue, without, in so exhausting my subject, exhausting at the same time my reader's patience. I have tried therefore to give something of the life of their history and times to the authors with whom I came in contact; to cast a little light on the idiosyncrasies or misfortunes of this one or of that; but to do them full justice, and to enable the reader to make their complete acquaintance, how was that possible with any regard for the laws of literary proportion? All I could do was to aim at something less dull than a dictionary, but something far short of a history. I trust that no one will be either attracted or alarmed by any anticipations suggested by the title of my book. Although primarily a book for the library, it is also one of which no drawing-room table need be the least afraid. If I have found anything in my condemned authors which they would have done better to have left unsaid, I have, in referring to their fortunes, felt under no compulsion to reproduce their indiscretions. But, in all of them put together, I doubt whether there is as much to offend a scrupulous taste as in many a latter-day novel, the claim of which to the distinction of burning is often as indisputable as the certainty of its regrettable immunity from that fiery but fitting fate. The custom I write about suggests some obvious reflections on the mutability of our national manners. Was the wisdom of our ancestors really so much greater than our own, as many profess to believe? If so, it is strange with how much of that wisdom we have learnt to dispense. One by one their old customs have fallen away from us, and I fancy that if any gentleman could come back to us from the seventeenth century, he would be less astonished by the novel sights he would see than by the old familiar sights he would miss. He would see no one standing in the pillory, no one being burnt at a stake, no one being "swum" for witchcraft, no one's veracity being tested by torture, and, above all, no hangman burning books at Cheapside, no unfortunate authors being flogged all the way from Fleet Street to Westminster. The absence of these things would probably strike him more than even the railways and the telegraph wires. Returning with his old-world ideas, he would wonder how life and property had survived the removal of their time-honoured props, or how, when all fear of punishment had been removed from the press, Church and State were still where he had left them. Reflecting on these things, he would recognise the fact that he himself had been living in an age of barbarism from which we, his posterity, were in process of gradual emergence. What vistas of still further improvement would not then be conjured up before his mind!

Chapter I Our Cottage Home MY early days were all spent in the beautiful county of Dumfries, which Scotch folks call the Queen of the South. There, in a small cottage, on the farm of Braehead, in the parish of Kirkmahoe, I was born on the 24th May, 1824. My father, James Paton, was a stocking manufacturer in a small way; and he and his young wife, Janet Jardine Rogerson, lived on terms of warm personal friendship with the "gentleman farmer," so they gave me his son's name, John Gibson; and the curly-haired child of the cottage was soon able to toddle across to the mansion, and became a great pet of the lady there. On my visit to Scotland in 1884 I drove out to Braehead; but we found no cottage, nor trace of a cottage, and amused ourselves by supposing that we could discover by the rising of the grassy mound, the outline where the foundations once had been! While yet a mere child, five years or so of age, my parents took me to a new home in the ancient village of Torthorwald, about four and a quarter miles from Dumfries, on the road to Lockerbie. At that time, say 1830, Torthorwald was a busy and thriving village, and comparatively populous, with its cottars and crofters, large farmers and small farmers, weavers and shoemakers, doggers and coopers, blacksmiths and tailors. Fifty-five years later, when I visited the scenes of my youth, the village proper was extinct, except for five thatched cottages where the lingering patriarchs were permitted to die slowly away, -soon they too would be swept into the large farms, and their garden plots plowed over, like sixty or seventy others that had been blotted out! From the Bank Hill, close above our village, and accessible in a walk of fifteen minutes, a view opens to the eye which, despite several easily understood prejudices of mine that may discount any opinion that I offer, still appears to me well worth seeing amongst all the beauties of Scotland. At your feet lay a thriving village, every cottage sitting in its own plot of garden, and sending up its blue cloud of "peat reek," which never somehow seemed to pollute the blessed air; and after all has been said or sung, a beautifully situated village of healthy and happy homes for God's children is surely the finest feature in every landscape! Looking from the Bank Hill on a summer day, Dumfries with its spires shone so conspicuous that you could have believed it not more than two miles away; the splendid sweeping vale through which Nith rolls to Solway, lay all before the naked eye, beautiful with village spires, mansion houses, and white shining farms; the Galloway hills, gloomy and far-tumbling, bounded the forward view, while to the left rose Criffel, cloud-capped and majestic; then the white sands of Solway, with tides swifter than horsemen; and finally the eye rested joyfully upon the hills of Cumberland, and noticed with glee the blue curling smoke from its villages on the southern Solway shores.

THE foregoing are but a few portions of the accounts published in Consul Casement's Report given by the Barbados men whose statements were taken. They have been here selected to show that the worst stories of almost incredible barbarity were more than confirmed. No apology is needed for setting them forth in this book. It is in the interests of truth and justice that one half of the world should know how another, remoter half lives. The history of the affair throws a light on the curious character of people of various nationalities connected with it. The Latin Americans, even those who committed the most appalling deeds, are such people as would under ordinary circumstances receive the traveller with high-sounding phrases of hospitality. Away from the restraining power of civilisation and public opinion, it is seen that men of certain character easily revert to primitive instincts of cruelty and oppression, and hold human life the cheapest thing on earth. The terrible indictment that has been made of Peruvian methods away from the influence of their cities shows how far from the principle of self-government the people of Latin America still are. It is to be recollected, moreover, that these poor forest Indians differ very little from the people who have formed the basis of Peruvian and Latin American nationality generally: whilst the Indians and Cholos of the uplands, who are still subjected to oppression and civic negligence, are those from whom Peru and others of the Andine republics draw, and always will draw, unless a strong tide of immigration sets in, the bulk of their citizens. The governing Peruvians and Bolivians of to-day are formed from that race. They bear its stamp upon their faces and cuticle. This brown race, which has, in Mexico and Peru, produced statesmen and law-givers, is nothing to be ashamed of, yet the mestizos, or people of mixed race, forming the bulk of the Latin American nations, are harsher in their conduct towards the Indian than are white men. Comparatively few women from Spain have entered the New World. The Indians have formed the mothers of the Peruvians and their neighbours, from Presidents and Cabinet Ministers downwards. These poor women, who have been outraged, starved, murdered, or burnt alive, are of their own flesh. What reparation will Peru make to expiate these terrible outrages against man and Nature? How will it compensate the relatives of the murdered, or the scarred and ruined survivors? Furthermore, what reparation will the European shareholders of the now liquidated company make? Swedish journalist Stieg Larsson planned ten installments in his Millennium series before his untimely death. The three novels he did write, beginning with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, had energy, spectacular violence, and superb plotting. Larsson's weird, sometimes clunky prose style, forgotten because there was real chemistry, even empathy, between his two stars, the journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the computer hacker Lisbeth Salander. The series made a fortune and, as no good deed goes unpunished, it has become a franchise. The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye is the second installment wrote by the Swedish biographer and novelist David Lagercrantz and translated by George Goulding. The Girl in the Spider's Web (2015) sold very well, and this new publication appeared with a full blockbuster treatment. Dysfunctional heroines are familiar in thrillers, as are also layers of gendered trauma, but Larsson's Salander was a fabulous, surprising character, who is a feminist superhero, an Amazonian queen, a pretty girl who fought back. Obsessive and antisocial, forged in the environment of violence she experienced as a child. She took the kind of revenge on rapists and pedophiles that most only fantasize about, taking on powerful, corrupt men with lawless violence. With Blomkvist, she was the charismatic half of one of the oddest but most useful and compelling crime fiction couples. Blomkvist, the old-school social justice fighter with a penchant for losers and a hatred of social hypocrisy, presented a perfect complement. The Girl Who Took an Eye for an Eye is the vision of the appalling things made to Salander when she was a child, but the story rambles between a bewildering collection of storylines that never come together. The novel starts with Salander in prison for unconvincing reasons. When she does wander onto the page, she gets banged up or does stuff on her computer, but continues ghostly and uninhabited. The writer commits the cardinal thriller sin of telling rather than revealing what she does. There are long, mansplaining sections about genetics and social research that made me pray to Elmore Leonard, the god of economic thriller writing, who famously disclosed that writers should "try to drop out the part that readers tend to jump." Lagercrantz has all the components of the Millennium series at his disposal, but the adrenaline is refraining Lagercrantz has turned Larsson's eccentric and feral feminism into a simple inversion. This time there are two female arch-villains after Salander. One is an aging, ailing Mad Scientist with a doctor's bag of syringes and lethal poisons determined that will reveal nothing of her social eugenics programme. The other is a ludicrously cartoonish gang boss who ends up hospitalized by Salander's quick hands working with a pair of dangerous brothers, Islamists, who have hired her to beat their jailed and silent sister. There are also, identity-switching twins who make the antics of Viola and Sebastian in Twelfth Night seem ordinary and many indications to Salander's evil twin. The reader observes that Salander and Blomkvist have a desire for equity, but because we employ so little time in the close description with the book's hero, it is not valid. There is a lethargy to the developing, and much of the balance relies on orchestrated interruptions and pauses, which irritate. Lagercrantz has all the components of the Millennium series at his disposal, but the adrenaline is not there.

Venus in Furs is a story by the Austrian novelist Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, and it is the best known of his works. The fiction was to be part of an epic list that Sacher-Masoch envisioned and called Legacy of Cain. The novel describes themes, like female dominance and sadomasochism, and character inspiration heavily from Sacher-Masoch's own life. Wanda von Dunajew, the book's central female character, was modeled after Fanny Pistor, that was an emerging writer. They met when Pistor contacted Sacher-Masoch, under feigned name and fictitious title of Baroness Bogdanoff, for recommendations on improving her writing to make it suitable for publication. The framing story involves a man who dreams of speaking to Venus regarding love while she wears furs. The unnamed storyteller tells his thoughts to a friend, Severin, who tells him how to break himself of his fascination with the evil women by reading a manuscript, Memoirs of a Supersensual Man. This manuscript is the story of a man, Severin von Kusiemski, who is so obsessed with a female, Wanda von Dunajew, that he requests to be her slave, and urges her to treat him in progressively more humiliating ways. At first, Wanda does not accede to the request, but after humoring Severin a bit, she discovers the advantages of the method to be interesting and enthusiastically welcomes the idea, although at the same time she despises Severin for allowing her to do so. Severin describes his feelings during these experiences as suprasensuality. Severin and Wanda travel to Florence. Along the way, Severin takes the general Russian servant's name of "Gregor" and the performance of Wanda's servant. In Florence, Wanda treats him mercilessly as a domestic and recruits a trio of African women to dominate him. The connection arrives at a crisis when Wanda meets a man to whom she would like to control, a Byronic hero known as Alexis Papadopolis. At the end...

Introduction Meals of many courses are neither practical nor popular with the modern hostess. For a company luncheon or supper it is not necessary to serve more than a hot dish, a salad, a biscuit or sandwich, a dessert and a beverage. A first course and a relish may be provided if desired. Sunday Night Suppers The following menus were arranged especially as Sunday night suppers, but they are equally suitable for midday luncheons or high teas. Many of the dishes will be found desirable for afternoon teas or evening spreads, and for use in tea and lunch rooms, and for automobile picnics. Preliminary Preparations Preparations for Sunday night suppers should be made on Saturday as far as possible. For a luncheon it is a help to have some things done the day before. For picnics and parties much must be done in advance. As an aid to the hostess we have listed after each menu what these preliminary preparations may be. Cooking at the Table Many of the hot dishes may be prepared in a chafing dish or on an electric grill. For these, much of the measuring may be done in advance, the ingredients being put in small dishes on a tray. Coffee and tea may be made at the table with electric appliances. Sandwiches and Biscuits Sandwiches may be made and wrapped first in dry cheesecloth, then in damp cheesecloth, and placed in a covered crock some hours before a meal. The hot biscuits may be replaced by rolls or bread and butter if desired. Automobile Picnics For picnics the beverages and hot dishes may be prepared at home and carried in thermos food jars. In some cases smaller amounts are called for than can be purchased, as one-half can, or one-fourth cup, in case supplies on hand are adequate without purchasing more than required. Butter only is given in the market orders. In cooking, margarine, lard, and other shortenings may be used instead, if preferred. Measurements In all recipes measurements are made level. Measuring cups, divided into thirds and quarters, are used, and tea and table measuring spoons. Cups of dry material are filled to overflowing by putting the material into the cup with a tablespoon, and are then leveled off with a knife. Tea and tablespoons are filled heaping with dry material, and then leveled off with a knife. Flour should be sifted once before measuring.

Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, the book is a satirical novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott. Written pseudonymously by "A Square," this book uses the fictional two-dimensional realm of Flatland to reflect on the hierarchy of Victorian society, but the novella's more enduring contribution is its exploration of dimensions. Several movies have been made from the story, for example, the feature film Flatland (2007). Other attempts have been short or experimental films, like the one narrated by Dudley Moore and the short films Flatland 2: Sphereland (2012) after Flatland: The Movie (2007). Although Flatland was ok when published, it did not obtain a great success. In the listing on Edwin Abbott in the Dictionary of National Biography, Flatland is not even mentioned. This book was discovered again after Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity was published, which introduced the concept of a fourth dimension. Flatland was referred to in a letter entitled "Euclid, Newton and Einstein" published in Nature. In this letter Abbott is depicted, as a prophet due to his intuition of the importance of time to explain certain phenomena: Many years in the past a little jeu d'esprit Dr. Edwin Abbott wrote a piece entitled Flatland. If there is a motion of our three-dimensional space pertinent to the fourth dimension, all the changes we encounter and assign to the flow of time will simply be because this movement, the bulk of the future as well as the past always existing in the fourth dimension.

3 May. Bistritz.-Left Munich at 8:35 P. M., on 1st May, arriving at Vienna early next morning; should have arrived at 6:46, but train was an hour late. Buda-Pesth seems a wonderful place, from the glimpse which I got of it from the train and the little I could walk through the streets. I feared to go very far from the station, as we had arrived late and would start as near the correct time as possible. The impression I had was that we were leaving the West and entering the East; the most western of splendid bridges over the Danube, which is here of noble width and depth, took us among the traditions of Turkish rule. We left in pretty good time, and came after nightfall to Klausenburgh. Here I stopped for the night at the Hotel Royale. I had for dinner, or rather supper, a chicken done up some way with red pepper, which was very good but thirsty. (Mem., get recipe for Mina.) I asked the waiter, and he said it was called "paprika hendl," and that, as it was a national dish, I should be able to get it anywhere along the Carpathians. I found my smattering of German very useful here; indeed, I don't know how I should be able to get on without it. Having had some time at my disposal when in London, I had visited the British Museum, and made search among the books and maps in the library regarding Transylvania; it had struck me that some foreknowledge of the country could hardly fail to have some importance in dealing with a nobleman of that country. I find that the district he named is in the extreme east of the country, just on the borders of three states, Transylvania, Moldavia and Bukovina, in the midst of the Carpathian mountains; one of the wildest and least known portions of Europe. I was not able to light on any map or work giving the exact locality of the Castle Dracula, as there are no maps of this country as yet to compare with our own Ordnance Survey maps; but I found that Bistritz, the post town named by Count Dracula, is a fairly well-known place. I shall enter here some of my notes, as they may refresh my memory when I talk over my travels with Mina. In the population of Transylvania there are four distinct nationalities: Saxons in the South, and mixed with them the Wallachs, who are the descendants of the Dacians; Magyars in the West, and Szekelys in the East and North. I am going among the latter, who claim to be descended from Attila and the Huns. This may be so, for when the Magyars conquered the country in the eleventh century they found the Huns settled in it. I read that every known superstition in the world is gathered into the horseshoe of the Carpathians, as if it were the centre of some sort of imaginative whirlpool; if so my stay may be very interesting. (Mem., I must ask the Count all about them.) I did not sleep well, though my bed was comfortable enough, for I had all sorts of queer dreams. There was a dog howling all night under my window, which may have had something to do with it; or it may have been the paprika, for I had to drink up all the water in my carafe, and was still thirsty. Towards morning I slept and was wakened by the continuous knocking at my door, so I guess I must have been sleeping soundly then. I had for breakfast more paprika, and a sort of porridge of maize flour which they said was "mamaliga," and egg-plant stuffed with forcemeat, a very excellent dish, which they call "impletata." I had to hurry breakfast, for the train started a little before eight, or rather it ought to have done so, for after rushing to the station at 7:30 I had to sit in the carriage for more than an hour before we began to move. It seems to me that the further east you go the more unpunctual are the trains. What ought they to be in China? All day long we seemed to dawdle through a country which was full of beauty of every kind. Sometimes we saw little towns or castles on the top of steep hills such as we see in old missals;

The Cuban Affair is Nelson DeMille's 20th novel.[1][2] DeMille had earlier novels win a place on the New York Times bestseller list.[3] According to Publishers Weekly, Simon & Schuster had scheduled its release for September 17, 2017. On June 2, 2017, Publishers Weekly published a profile of DeMille, focused around The Cuban Affair.[4] In that profile, DeMille traced his interest in Cuba to neighbors who were Cuban refugees he knew from his childhood. DeMille was finally able to visit Cuba in October 2015, where he was able to scout locations for the Cuban portion of the novel. On September 5, 2017, DeMille and Alan P. Gross, who had been imprisoned in Cuba, appeared on a panel together, to discuss conditions in Cuba.[5] Another author, Jim Hughes, published a novel also named The Cuban Affair in 2010.[6] The novel's hero is a veteran, who served in Afghanistan.[1] Cuban-Americans hire him to covertly land in Cuba, and retrieve a cache of documents, and funds. Nelson Richard DeMille (born August 23, 1943) is an American author of action adventure and suspense novels. His novels include Plum Island, The Charm School, and The Gold Coast. DeMille has also written under the pen names Jack Cannon, Kurt Ladner, Ellen Kay and Brad Matthews. Biography DeMille was born in New York City on August 23, 1943. He moved as a child with his family to Long Island. He attended Elmont Memorial High School where he played football and ran track. After spending three years at Hofstra University, he joined the Army and attended Officer Candidate School. He was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army (1966-69) and saw action as an infantry platoon leader with the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam. He was decorated with the Air Medal, Bronze Star, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. DeMille returned to the States and went back to Hofstra University, where he received his degree in political science and history. He has three children, Lauren, Alexander, and James, and still lives on Long Island. DeMille's earlier books were NYPD detective novels. His first major novel was By the Rivers of Babylon, published in 1978 and still in print, as are all his succeeding novels. He is a member of American Mensa, the Authors Guild, and past president of the Mystery Writers of America.
