Historically, social researchers have shown a willingness to exploit new technologies to enhance, facilitate and support their various activities. However, arguably no other technological development has influenced the landscape of social research as rapidly and fundamentally as the Internet. This collection avoids both uncritical embrace and wholesale dismissal by considering some of the key literature in the field of Internet research methods. Volume One: Core Issues, Debates and Controversies in Internet Research introduces themes and issues that run across all four volumes such as: epistemology, ontology and methodology in the online world; access, social divisions and the 'digital divide'; and the ethics of online research. Volume Two: Taking Research Online - Internet Survey and Sampling addresses the range of resources, digital archives and Internet-based data sources that exist online from relatively straightforward and practical guides to such material through to more polemical pieces which consider problems relating to the use, access and analysis of online data and resources. Volume Three: Taking Research Online - Qualitative Approaches considers the broad range of approaches to conducting researching via or 'in' the Internet. The focus is on conventional methods that have been 'taken online', and which in doing so, have become transformed in scope and character. Volume Four: Research 'On' and 'In' the Internet - Investigating the Online World follows logically from that which precedes it in exploring how social research has been 'taken online', not simply through the deployment of existing methods and techniques via the Internet, but in researchers' increasing recognition and investigation of the online world as a sphere of human interaction - a socio-cultural arena to be explored 'from the desktop' as it were.

This memoir is based on my experiences in this world. Bob Marley, Princess Diana, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Mother Theresa, Deepak Chopra, Oprah Winfrey, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. have all talked about essentially the same thing: that there is One Universal Love that flows inside us all. And yet, life is often about harmonizing with the co-existence of opposite values. We constantly strive for balance within ourselves between life and death, being happy or sad, up and down, love and fear, pain and growth, and light and dark. One cannot exist without the other. My own conscious contact came about as a result of a devastatingly painful experience, after which I began to realize that nothing is impossible, and that only together, can we realize this truth. I began to understand how much we all share in this life, and I realized we are clearly meant to work through our pain collectively. Together, we will discover happier states of existence. It is only with the true caring and sharing of so many, that I was able to survive a potentially insurmountable ordeal, and I am here today to share with you all I have learned. And this is my story -- of how I came to experience, embrace, and be transformed by, that Universal Love that great men and women before me, have also discovered. My goal is to connect and relate with you, my reader, on the most important and meaningful levels. I have learned that love is the answer, and when we open up to the many ways we can receive love every moment of our lives together, then life takes on a whole new meaning, one that will be better than anything we can imagine. It is my sincere hope that this book helps to heal, and promotes goodness in a world that can often be a tough playing field.

Taking a unique approach to this question, Jason Hughes moves beyond the usual focus on biological addiction that dominates news coverage and public health studies and invites us to reconsider how social and personal understandings of smoking crucially affect the way people experience it. Learning to Smoke examines the diverse sociological and cultural processes that have compelled people to smoke since the practice was first introduced to the West during the sixteenth century. Hughes traces the transformations of tobacco and its use over time, from its role as a hallucinogen in Native American shamanistic ritual to its use as a prophylactic against the plague and a cure for cancer by early Europeans, and finally to the current view of smoking as a global pandemic. He then analyzes tobacco from the perspective of the individual user, exploring how its consumption relates to issues of identity and life changes. Comparing sociocultural and personal experiences, Hughes ultimately asks what the patterns of tobacco use mean for the clinical treatment of smokers and for public policy on smoking.
