Explorant les notions d’identité, de transmission, de relations interethniques, Africville retrace sur trois générations l’histoire de la communauté noire américaine et canadienne à travers la saga familiale des Sebolt. Années 1930. Kath Ella Selbot refuse de suivre son destin tout tracé de fille de couleur et quitte Africville, village fondé par d’anciens esclaves en Nouvelle-Ecosse, afin de poursuivre ses études. Après une histoire d’amour marquée par le deuil, elle donnera naissance à un fils, Omar, qui sera rebaptisé Etienne. Années 1960. Etienne, dont la pâleur de la peau lui permet de passer pour un blanc, s’est éloigné de ses origines et vit en Alabama. Alors que le mouvement des droits civique fait rage, il n’ose y participer et reste déchiré entre ses racines noires et la peur de perdre la vie qu’il est en train de construire. Ce n’est qu’à sa mort que son fils Walter découvrira son héritage familial. Le jeune homme décide alors de retrouver ses ancêtres et de se réconcilier avec un passé marqué par la peur et la discrimination. Un roman triptyque vibrant, fruit de plus de vingt ans de recherches, qui n’est pas sans rappeler Underground Railroad, No home ou encore Les Douze tribus d’Hattie. Jeffrey Colvin aborde avec subtilité la question peu explorée du racisme intériorisé et particulièrement le thème du passing, (le fait de passer pour blanc alors que l’on est noir). À propos de l’auteur Jeffrey Colvin est né en Alabama et vit actuellement à New York. Diplômé de l’Académie Navale des États Unis et de l'université d’Harvard, et il a servi dans le corps des marines pendant cinq ans, a été conseiller au Congrès et analyste dans la publicité avant d’intégrer l'université de Columbia où il a été diplômé en création littéraire. Jeffrey Colvin est actuellement éditeur adjoint du Narrative Magazine. Africville est son premier roman.
