A Tale of Sand follows scruffy everyman, Mac, who wakes up in an unfamiliar town, and is chased across the desert of the American Southwest by all manners of man and beast of unimaginable proportions. Produced with the complete blessing of Lisa Henson, A Tale of Sand will allow Henson fans to recognize some of the inspirations and set pieces that appeared in later Henson Company productions.

Entre 1967 et 1974, Jim Henson et Jerry Juhl, son vieux partenaire d'écriture, ont développé trois versions du scénario d'un film long métrage intitulé Tale of Sand. Alors qu'il travaille sur la version finale de ce script, Jim Henson, soudain accaparé par la production de 1, rue Sésame et du Muppet Show, a dû laisser derrière lui les films expérimentaux de sa jeunesse pour se concentrer sur ces créations qui allaient le rendre mondialement célèbre. Depuis cette époque, Tale of Sand était demeuré enfoui dans les archives de la Jim Henson Company - le seul scénario de long métrage écrit par Jim Henson qu'il n'ait jamais réussi à produire de son vivant. Cet album, publié avec la bénédiction de la Jim Henson Company sous la supervision de sa fille Lisa Henson, a obtenu de nombreuses récompenses aux Etats-Unis, dont certaines des plus prestigieuses : 3 Eisner Awards, 1 Joe Shuster Award, 2 Harvey Award, entre autres.
