Der Band widmet sich dem Kulturraum ‚Mitteleuropa‘. Das Thema wird nicht als geopolitisches Problem abgehandelt, sondern fokussiert werden politische, soziale und kulturelle Konzepte der Geschichte, der personalen, nationalen und (mittel)europäischen Identität, wie sie von Politikern, Soziologen, Philosophen, Schriftstellern und Literaturwissenschaftlern im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert diskutiert werden. Mitteleuropa wird gekennzeichnet durch Konflikte, kulturelle Interaktionen, die Mischung von Kulturen sowie unterschiedliche Traditionen, religiöse Orientierungen, nationale Interessen, Ideologien und Ideen. Das führte zwar zu zahlreichen Kontroversen, Spannungen und Konflikten, schuf aber auch ein auf seine Weise einzigartiges intellektuell und kulturell inspirierendes Umfeld. Kulturelle Vielfalt (Sprache, Religion, Kunst, Literatur) und ethnische Minderheiten wurden innerhalb der mitteleuropäischen Staaten bis in das frühe 20. Jahrhundert zumindest als existenzberechtigt angesehen. Der Fokus liegt auf Persönlichkeiten, die als „hybrid border crossers" den Kulturraum prägten und weiterhin prägen. Das Ziel des Bandes geht über eine Bestandsaufnahme hinaus und fragt auch nach der Wirkungsgeschichte und den Auswirkungen für die Gegenwart.

Úvodní poznámka editora: Čtvrtý svazek učebních textů ze Soudobé sociologie nese podtitul, který je inspirován francouzským sociologem Michelem Maffesolim. Formulace Aktuální a každodenní naznačuje, že obsah má poměrně heterogenní charakter a zahrnuje příspěvky sledující tematiku, jež v současnosti přitahuje pozornost a namnoze se dotýká zkoumání otázek každodenního života. Touto publikací se uzavírá tetralogie studijních textů, jejíž jednotlivé svazky vyšly v předchozích třech letech. První díl s podtitulem Teoretické koncepce a jejich autoři [2007] se zaměřil na klíčové postavy soudobého sociálněvědního myšlení (I. Wallerstein, Z. Bauman, A. Toffler, N. Luhmann, R. Munch, A. Giddens, M. Castells, U. Beck, A. Honneth, N. Fraser, A. Etzioni). Obsah druhého dílu [2008] je ve své podstatě vymezen názvem Teorie jednání a sociální struktury (obsahuje kapitoly věnované koncepcím H. Blumera, H. Garfinkela, E. Goffmana, P. Bergera, T. Luck-manna, R. Collinse, J. Habermase, P. Bourdieua, J. S. Colemana, neopozitivismu, funkcionalismu, diskurzivní analýze, sociální stratifikaci, kohezi, důvěře, sociálnímu kapitálu a deviaci). Kapitoly třetího dílu [2008] Diagnózy soudobých společností referují o podstatných otázkách života v soudobých společnostech (vědění, informace, ekologie, práce, kvalita života, sociální stát, kultura, postmoderna, multikulturalismus, globalizace, rizika, konflikty) a o autorech, kteří se jimi zabývají (D. Bell, A. Touraine, R. N. Bellah, G. Schul-ze, G. Lipovetsky, J. Baudrillard, P. Virilio, J. Alexander). Závěrečný, čtvrtý svazek je různorodý co do sledované tematiky (sociobiologie, trvale udržitelný rozvoj, kulturami studia, feminismus, distributivní spravedlnost, typy kapitálů, střední třída, vysoké a populární umění, symbolické násilí, náboženství, sociální sítě, grounded theory) i postav sociologického myšlení, jimž je věnována pozornost (R. Sennett, M. Maffesoli, B. Latour, M. Juergensmeyer). Také v tomto případě jako u předchozích svazků platí, že předkládané učební texty nemají charakter koncepčně strukturované učebnice, nýbrž spíše sborníku, jehož hlavním cílem je představit ze soudobé sociologie to, co u nás zatím není příliš známé a rozšířené. Editor, který se i tentokrát obklopil spoluautory mladšího věku s různorodou publikační zkušeností, doufá, že se autorskému kolektivu podařilo sestavit kolekci textů, která má šanci oslovit nejen studenty sociologie, ale i širší zainteresovanou veřejnost.
