Aunque la creencia general es que la literatura teórica sobre la fotografía no ha existido, una reflexión más profunda, como indica Joan Fontcuberta, revela que fueron los convencionalismos culturales y los factores ideológicos los que provocaron que esa literatura cayera en el olvido. La irrupción del conceptualismo propiciará la reflexión teórica acerca del arte y, con ello, los ensayos teóricos de fotógrafos o allegados al medio adquieren de nuevo toda su relevancia. Estética fotográfica reúne una veintena de ensayos significativos que explican los fundamentos teóricos de las diferentes tendencias de la fotografía. Entre sus autores se cuentan precursores del medio como Fox Talbot o Henry Peach Robinson, artistas como Moholy-Nagy y fotógrafos contemporáneos influyentes como Edward Weston o Minor White. Aunque esta antología estética aspira a ser una herramienta útil para estudiantes y fotógrafos, también constituye una buena introducción a la polémica teórica de un medio que ha influido de manera clave en las artes visuales y en la cultura contemporánea.

64P. is a photo-essay collection whose aim is to recover and raise the value of brevity. It is a collection that chooses intensity over duration. 64P. takes up a creative space akin to short stories in literature or short films in cinema. There are other ways to tell. Some things must necessarily be brief. This is why the most outstanding photographers have been invited to create under this premise. Joan Fontcuberta's work conveys a critic to conceiving photography as evidence of reality. He aims to question the veracity attributed to photographs, by means of image and story manipulation as well as intense interaction with viewers. Fontcuberta has carried out a diverse activity within the world of photography, as a creator, teacher, critic, curator and historian. His work has been recognised with important awards such as the Spanish National Photography Award. In 2013 he became the first Spanish photographer to win the prestigious Hasselblad Award.

The first English translation of a renowned collection of essays by Joan Fontcuberta, in which he considers the technological shift that photography has undergone in recent years. Fontcuberta uses the motif of Pandora's box to conceptualise the capricious nature of photography, and its fickle relationship to truth - employing the Greek myth concerning a large jar containing myriad forms of human unhappiness, or blessings, depending on the version you read. As Pandora's camera, digital technology spells calamity to some and liberation to others; it is blamed for irretrievably discrediting veracity, but at the same time it introduces a new degree of truth. Fontcuberta examines the new principles that have arisen within the digital ecosystem, in critical reflections inspired by the hope that still remains in the notion of a postmodern Pandora's camera - one that might not only describe our environment, but also bring transparency to it.

During the last six years, the photographer Joan Fontcuberta (Barcelona, 1955) has visited libraries and archives throughout Europe and North America and gathered together images of censured text from different epochs and authors -Desiderius Erasmus, Fernando de Rojas, Francisco de Quevedo, among others. Based on this series of images, Joan Fontcuberta presents 'Deletrix', an artistic project (an exhibition and an artist book) on censorship with the direct involvement of PEN Catalan. 'Deletrix' includes a series of images by the photographer together with texts in which writers of international renown reflect on censorship. This project, driven by PEN Catalan aspires to become a literary and artistic benchmark volume on censorship. Contributions by: Contributions by Carme Arenas, Manuel Guerrero Brullet, Chenjerai Hove, Herta Muller (Nobel Prize for Literature, 2009), Emmanuel Pierrat, John Ralston Saul and Salman Rushdie. AUTHOR: Joan Fontcuberta was awarded the Hasselblad Prize (2013), considered as the Nobel in photography, in recognition of his entire career.
