This book delves into the ethical dimension of urban life: how should one live in the city? What constitutes a ‘good’ life under urban condition? Whose gets to live a ‘good’ life, and whose ideas of morality, propriety and ‘good’ prevail? What is the connection between the ‘good’ and the ‘just’ in urban life? Rather than philosophizing the ‘good’ and proper life in cities, the book considers what happens when urban conflicts and urban futures are carried out as conflicts over the good and proper life in cities. It offers an understanding of how ethical discourses, ideals and values are harmonized with material interests of different groups, taking up cases studies about environmental protection, co-housing schemes, political protest, heritage preservation, participatory planning, collaborative art production, and other topics from different eras and parts of the globe. This book offers multidisciplinary insights, ethnographic research and conceptual tools and resources to explore and better understand such conflicts. It questions the ways in which urban ethics draw on tacit moral economies of urban life and the ways in which such moral economies become explicit, political and programmatic. In diesem Band werden die Ergebnisse der ersten deutsch-japanischen Konferenz der Disziplin Volkskunde/Europäische Ethnologie präsentiert, die im November 2016 an der LMU München stattfand. Thematisch werden zunächst die grundsätzlichen Positionen und historischen Entwicklungen der japanischen und deutschen Volkskunde herausgearbeitet. In weiteren Sektionen geht es um aktuelle Tendenzen in der Stadtforschung und um die jüngsten Ergebnisse einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Katastrophenforschung. Ein weiteres Augenmerk wird auf Forschungen zu Migration und Multikulturalität gelegt. Schließlich kreisen mehrere Beiträge um die Themenkomplexe Kulturelles Erbe, Traditionen, Glaube und Ritual. Der Band gibt einen gelungenen Überblick über die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede japanischer und deutscher volkskundlich-kulturwissenschaftlicher Forschung. Er eröffnet gerade dem deutschsprachigen Publikum einen sehr guten Überblick über die Geschichte und Gegenwart der japanischen Volkskunde, zeigt die wichtigsten Forschungsfelder, Methoden und Theorien nach und setzt sie in ein Verhältnis zu deutschsprachigen Arbeiten. Der Band stellt zudem einen Auftakt zu einem intensiveren Austausch zwischen japanischen und deutschsprachigen Forscher_innen dar.

Dieser Band versammelt 16 Forschungsbeiträge, die vorführen, was die Europäische Ethnologie an der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München derzeit ausmacht und welche inhaltlichen sowie konzeptionellen Diskussionen hier geführt werden. Die Aufsätze weisen vom Gegenstandsbereich und von den Ansätzen her ein breites Spektrum auf. So handeln sie von den Umbrüchen in der Arbeitswelt und von aktuellen und historischen Dynamiken des Lebens in Städten. This volume offers a selection of articles developed from the SIEF (International Society for Ethnology and Folklore) congress 2017 in Göttingen which all focus on the topic of dwelling. How are ways of dwelling imagined, conceptualized, narrated, crafted, materialized, put in practice, represented in artwork, transformed and challenged? What is the role of mobility and migration, memory and creativity, hopes and fears when individuals and groups make their homes? What epistemological and methodological grounds do ethnologists, folklorists and specialists from neighbouring disciplines use to grasp the concept of dwelling? The articles include aspects of buildings and atmospheres, personal migrant objects in transnational living contexts, the role of objects in artwork, the importance of specific places and quarters for residents, traumatic memories of victims and their relatives, dwelling and old age, a historical overview of the construction of concepts of home and some fundamental anthropological considerations linked with dwelling.

This volume addresses the question of how the rapidly rising cost of living in prospering cities affects the everyday life and life plans of the middle class. Particularly the depths of focus of a cultural anthropological, ethnographic view of the lived everyday life of people thus facilitates insight and understanding which is missing in certain macro perspectives in the economics and social sciences. Therefore, in the following contributions which are based on examples from Germany and Sweden, colleagues will discuss the question of how members of the middle class deal with residing and living in today’s postmodern cities, which tactics they develop and which strategies become apparent before the background of the processes sketched above. The seven papers originate from the panel “The vulnerable Middle Class? Strategies of housing in a prospering city” which was organized by the two editors at the 13th congress of the Societé Internationale d’Ethnologie et de Folklore 2017 in Göttingen, titled “Ways of Dwelling. Crisis – Craft – Creativity“.
