John Baldessari, conceptual artist and teacher, has lived and worked in California all his life. Considered a pioneer of postmodern ideas in the 1970s, he came to prominence with his early text paintings and moved on to photographic images paired with text. He has maintained his interest in the relationship of words and imagery, of delighting in the absurd, and pointing out the irony in contemporary art theory for more than 35 years. Using advanced technology to transform and isolate moments from movies and televised sporting events, Paul Pfeiffer's work examines contemporary notions of racial and sexual identity and how we respond to the human body when it is placed in extreme situations such as ecstasy and pain. Pfeiffer's work also explores issues of time and the increasingly blurry distinction between reality and representation in everyday life. Recent installation pieces transfer mediated, image-based knowledge into physical spaces, with references to movies like "The Amityville Horror." Museum Haus Lange Krefeld

The works of John Baldessari, pioneer of American Conceptual Art and one of the most famous contemporary artists, have in recent years, been more closely linked to specific exhibition spaces. He took up the challenge of producing an installation for the Museum Haus Lange in Krefeld and radically turned the architecture of the building on its head ndash; a first in Baldessari's oeuvre. Here he consistently 'rubs' the basic elements of the Mies van der Rohe building 'up the wrong way', producing something astonishing and new. The viewer is drawn into a hybrid unit of pictures and architectonic set pieces where the paradigms of modern construction are deconstructed. They lose their gravity in the undertow of the enigmatic humour of his intervention. Here Baldessari's work can be viewed as a subversive contribution to Bauhaus Year 2009. A major figure in contemporary art, John Baldessari is widely considered one of the most influential artists to emerge since the mid-1960s. From his early text-and-image paintings to his more recent photo collages and installations, Baldessari has continued to make art that addresses the social impact of mass culture, often playfully through strategies of appropriation and deconstruction. Baldessari's lifelong interest in language, written and visual, and the interaction between the two, raises questions about the nature of communication and perception. More than 400 illustrations are presented in full colour in this monograph published in conjunction with a major exhibition organised by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Tate Modern in London. Eleven essays by critics, curators, art historians, and an artist and former student of Baldessari's round out this volume. Few contemporary artists have achieved the range and relevance of Baldessari's oeuvre, which is finally given its due in this elegant retrospective book.
