Narodil se v Portlandu v Oregonu a ve věku šesti měsíců byl adoptován irskými katolickými manželi Callahanovými. Vyrůstal v Dalles, 80 mil východně od Portlandu, společně s pěti sourozenci. Jeho kreslířský talent se projevil už v katolické škole, kde vytvářel karikatury spolužáků a učitelek-jeptišek. Ve třinácti letech při smuteční hostině na babiččině pohřbu ukradl a vypil láhev ginu, čímž odstartoval čtrnáctiletou éru těžkého alkoholismu. Alkohol sehrál svou roli při těžké automobilové nehodě, následkem níž ochrnul na celé tělo. Pohybovat mohl pouze hlavou. V pití pokračoval i během následné rehabilitace. Kvůli alkoholu se propadl na nejhlubší dno. Po jednom zážitku hraničícím s halucinací se rozhodl s problémy zabojovat. Začal navštěvovat protialkoholní poradnu a připojil se k Anonymním alkoholikům. Od té doby se alkoholu nedotkl. Zapsal se na Portlandskou státní univerzitu, kde získal bakalářský titul. Poté, co podstoupil rozsáhlou fyzioterapii, byl konečně schopen „udržet“ pero. V roce 1981 se tedy mohl vrátit ke karikatuře. Své obrázky začal prodávat. Později, jak jeho kariéra rostla, zdobily jeho kresby časopisy Penthouse, The New Yorker, The Chicago Tribune a mnoho dalších. Z jeho kreseb byly vytvořeny také dva kreslené televizní seriály (Pelswick, Quads). Jeho umělecký styl byl jednoduchý a často drsný, i když stále čitelný.
