En communiant avec l'autre dans la contemplation de l'oeuvre, nous retrouvons ce quelque chose de commun à tous, ce « juger ensemble » indispensable à la communication immédiate de l'homme avec l'homme. Mais au-delà de l'évidence d'une telle expérience esthétique, il importe de questionner l'oeuvre au plus près d'elle-même : l'approche du moment beethovénien, convié ici comme topos privilégié, se fera donc par la voie d'une analyse empirique. Il convient de sonder cette relation intrinsèque qui nous lie à l'oeuvre, afin de tenter de saisir, comment l'idée même du partage, en tant que source première de notre « être-humain », constitue l'aboutissement ultime de notre écoute. Comment toutefois justifier l'intrusion de l'analyse dans une région occupée par cet être secret sur lequel la parole n'a que peu de prise ? On répondra en rappelant que le logos n'est à même de nous apprendre quelque chose sur l'oeuvre que parce que précisément cette dernière demande à être authentifiée par les mots décrivant l'expérience esthétique de l'homme : telle est son exigence pour exister librement, pour s'émanciper de son créateur, pour briser tout lien singulier avec lui et affirmer le Nous qu'elle n'a jamais cessé d'être.

Speed Bumps on a Dirt Road is a living document of country music's founding fathers and mothers. John Cohen photographed musicians, at home, backstage at public events, from the wings at fiddlers' conventions, out in country music parks, and in the studio for live radio show performances and recording sessions. Back in 1961 it was still possible to know a few of America's original country musicians from the '20s and '30s. Renowned and celebrated musician and artist John Cohen came of age at the confluence of old time and early bluegrass music, the historic intersection of traditional and folk music. Cohen traveled the country playing music, recording, and documenting what was to be a generation of musicians who would influence American music and culture for decades to come. Traveling between the Union Grove fiddlers' convention to the Grand Ole Opry to a coal celebration in Hazard, Kentucky, Cohen made historic photographs of performers like Bill Monroe and Doc Watson, the country's very first all-bluegrass show, and a bluegrass bar in Baltimore, among much more. Speed Bumps on a Dirt Road presents old time music as the root of country music. Includes photographs of: Flatt & Scruggs, fiddler "Eck" Robertson in Amarillo, Texas, Doc Watson, bluegrass fiddler "Tex" Logan, the Stanley Brothers at Sunset Park, Sara and Maybelle of the Carter Family, and Cousin Emmy, Alice & Hazel, and a dulcimer in a parking lot.

John Cohen was a founding member of the New Lost City Ramblers, one of the folk revival's most authentic and respected musical groups. In the 1960s he made a series of photographs of the last years of Woody Guthrie's life, and early portraits of Bob Dylan on his arrival in New York, depicting two titans of American music at opposite ends of their careers. In the process, Cohen portrayed one of the great moments of American folk music history. The book contains other images from the 1960s including the music scenes at Washington Square and on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, images of Jerry Garcia and the musicians in San Francisco's "Family Dog," as well as the psychedelic "Sky River Rock" festival. In 1970, Dylan requested Cohen make another set of color photographs of him with a "camera that could take photographs from a block away." By then, he had become world-famous. Bob was seen walking unrecognized on the streets of the city and at a farm in upstate NY. The photographs were used in Dylan's album "Self Portrait."
