The Errours of the Carelesse by Necessitie Confuted [by J. Goodwin?]

First published in 1999, this volume took part in the emerging sociological debate on gender in the workplace by studying men’s work, lives, gender roles and psychological health through the gender lens. Recent changes in the labour market, not least the marked increase of women at work, have been argued to have led to a crisis of masculinity and a re-evaluation of men’s roles. This book has four main aims: to establish that there is a real absence of an empirical understanding of men in British gender-based sociological research; to explore men’s recent experiences of the British labour market; to explore how masculinity and work are linked and maintained by critically examining existing accounts of gender theory and feminism; and finally to provide an empirical account of men's work and male lives via an analysis of existing data. The male workers were identified in the National Child Development Study 1991 and compared with male full-time workers and similar groups of women in the same study. Five areas of these men's lives were explored empirically: characteristics of male workers in NCDS5; men’s attitudes to work; men and training experiences; men and household work; and finally men and mental ill health. The book concludes that the nature of men’s work needs to be reconsidered and that the nature of gender research, particularly that relating to men, needs to be expanded and made more explicit.

This book has been written as a guide for everyone involved with honey shows, be it organising, exhibiting or judging. If on the day of the show the book has helped to achieve successful organisation, high standards of exhibiting, well-written and unambiguous honey show schedules, increased interest in honey shows, and more applicants for the BBKA Show Judge certificate, the writing of the book will have been worthwhile. The chapter on show management is intended as a guide both for large shows and for minor, branch association shows. What is not understood is that larger shows are very often easier and require less work, since County, Floral and Agricultural shows have the resources, facilities and show management that make organisation somewhat simpler for the Honey Section show manager. In contrast the show manager of small shows may be responsible for all the show organisation required, both prior to the show and during the showing period. Hopefully the reader will find in this chapter a simplified but comprehensive guide of show management. When competing in honey shows you should always enter to win. This book explains what is expected of the exhibit in each class and category. The importance of the boring exhibit containers (honey jars, boxes and bags) is stressed, in addition to their contents, the equipment, and the required method for showing and producing winning exhibits for each class and category. Honey show judging is necessarily evolving with the requirements of modern day-to-day beekeeping. Examples include the exhibition of microscope slides, videos and on-line essays. The judging section is intended for prospective judges starting their exam portfolio or well on the path to becoming qualified Honey Show Judges. For all the categories there is a list of the equipment the prospective judge should have to hand, an advised method and procedure and the responsibilities and pitfalls of which a prospective honey judge should be aware.

In the nineteenth century the War Office showed little interest in developing large heavy artillery for its land forces, preferring instead to equip its warships with the biggest guns. Private initiatives to mount a gun on a railway truck pulled by a steam engine were demonstrated before military chiefs in the Southern Counties, but not taken up. However, the development of longer-range guns, weighing up to 250 tons, to smash through the massive armies and trench systems on the Western Front in 1916, led to a rethink. The only way to move these monsters about quickly in countryside thick with mud was to mount them on specially built railway trucks towed by locomotives. The railway guns were to be put on little-used country lines where they could fire on beaches, road junctions and harbors. The locations and cooperation given by the independent railway companies is explained, as are the difficulties of using the same lines for war and civilian traffic. The First World War also saw the emergence of large training camps for railway men. When the war ended most railway guns were dismantled and lost in ordnance depots. The Army Council was uncertain about artillery needs in a future war, so training, and development stopped. This book largely concentrates on the realities of the time, the type of gun, the locomotives, artillery targets, locations, and what it was like when firing took place. It is fully illustrated with pictures, maps and plans covering different aspects of railway guns their locomotives and equipment.

Levels of suffering among young people have always been much higher than governments suggest. Indeed, policies aimed at young workers have often been framed in ways that help secure conformity to a new employment landscape in which traditional securities have been progressively removed. Increasingly punitive welfare regimes have resulted in new hardships, especially among young women and those living in depressed labour markets. Framed by the ideas of Norbert Elias, Young People in the Labour Market challenges the idea that changing economic landscapes have given birth to a ‘Precariat’ and argues that labour insecurity is more deep-rooted and complex than others have suggested. Focusing on young people and the ways in which their working lives have changed between the 1980s recession and the Great Recession of 2008/2009 and its immediate aftermath, the book begins by drawing attention to trends already emerging in the preceding two decades. Drawing on data originally collected during the 1980s recession and comparing it to contemporary data drawn from the UK Household Longitudinal Study, the book explores the ways in which young people have adjusted to the changes, arguing that life satisfaction and optimism are linked to labour market conditions. A timely volume, this book will be of interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers who are interested in fields such as Sociology, Social Policy, Management and Youth Studies.

Biographical research may take a range of forms and may vary in its application and approach but has the unified and coherent aim to give 'voice' to individuals. The central concern of this collection is to assemble articles (from sociology, social psychology, education, health, criminology, social gerontology, epidemiology, management and organizational research) that illustrate the full range of debates, methods and techniques that can be combined under the heading 'biographical research'. Volume Four: Other Documents of Life: Photographs, Cyber Documents and Ephemera focuses on the 'other' human documents and objects, like photographs, cyber-documents (emails, blogs, social networking sites, webpages) and other ephemera (such as official documents) that are used extensively in biographical research.

SAGE Biographical Research

John Goodwin (1593-1665), the eminent Puritan Arminian divine, was a man ahead of his time who lived in a turbulent era in which many principals, both theological and governmental, were subjects of controversy. This new edition of Redemption Redeemed (originally published in 1651), provides a major refutation of the Calvinistic limited atonement doctrine. Goodwin has written an adversarial treatise in which he, step by step, examines the overwhelming scriptural and theological evidence supporting the idea that Christ died for all mankind. He also refutes the opposing arguments of his day and argues that God, through his grace, provides the opportunity for all people to be saved.
