Oh, the gentle Fum-Fum was a worshipful youth A student of talent, of trust, and of truth! Pi-ping, an eminent modern poet of China, wrote a series of poeins with the excellent design of warning his countrymen against the vices which most prevailed amongst them. From these we have selected the one devoted to the subject of OpiumSmoking; but we have found it impossible to preserve, in an English version, the epic gravity and high moral dignity of tone that characterize the serious poetry of the Chinese. It may give additional interest to the subject to mention, that the author died but a few years since, of the pernicious habit he deprecates; having sought inspiration from the pipe whilst engaged in the composition of this poem. t These lines contain a beautiful moral reflection and warning, applicable to this story; but are printed in the i riginal language? from having baffled every attempt at translation. A Christmas Carol is a story of a bitter old miser Ebenezer Scrooge and how he was transformed by supernatural visits from his diseased business partner, Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come. Described as a penny clutching old sinner who hates Christmas calling it “Humbug”, Ebenezer Scrooge turns down his nephew Fred's Christmas dinner invitation, and impolitely turns away two gentlemen seeking a donation from him to help provide Christmas dinner for the poor. Allowing his overworked and underpaid clerk Bob Cratch it Christmas Day off with pay was about all the Christmas gift there was from Ebenezer Scrooge. Yet the tight fisted miser called it, “a poor excuse for picking a man's pocket every 25th of December!"

Christmas with Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens wrote "A Christmas Carol" in six weeks at the end of 1843, during a particularly intense time of creativity. He was having financial difficulties and was determined to have the manuscript ready for publication for the Christmas market. This book contains a clear copy Dickens' one and only manuscript, written by his hand, with his revisions and corrections evident on every page. The revisions show how Dickens made the verbs become more active, the number of words became fewer, achieving greater immediacy and vividness. This manuscript was handed to the printer in this form and was published on 19th December 1843. This edition has each of the 66 pages of the original manuscript copied onto the left hand page and the corresponding words typed on the right hand page. The book also contains the eight original illustrations by John Leech, the four color illustrations are on the cover of the book.
