No literature can produce a more original writer than Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann (1776 1822), a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror, better known by his pen name E. T. A. Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann). His works are very numerous and were published at Berlin in fifteen volumes. He is the subject and hero of Jacques Offenbach's famous but fictional opera The Tales of Hoffmann.---Of the two tales in this book, "The Sandman" is from the collection "Night Pieces," and The Elementary Spirit is from his "Later Works." In these stories, Hoffmann's purpose is to point out the ill-effect of a morbid desire after an imaginary world, and a distaste for realities. Different as their adventures are, there is a striking similarity in the characters of Nathaniel (in "The Sandman") and Victor (in "The Elementary Spirit"). However wild may be the subjects of Hoffmann, and however rambling his method of treating them, his style is remarkably lucid.---The story of the Sandman had its origin in a discussion which actually took place between La Motte Fouque (a German writer of the romantic movement, 1777 1843) and some friends, at which Hoffmann was present. Some of the party found fault with the cold, mechanical deportment of a young lady of their acquaintance, while La Motte Fouque zealously defended her. Here Hoffmann caught the notion of the automaton Olympia, and the arguments used by Nathaniel are those that were employed by La Motte Fouque."

Excerpt from Goethe on the Theater: Selections From the Conversations With Eckermann In 1823, nine years before Goethe's death, Johann Peter Eckermann, a young man in his early thirties, journeyed on foot from Hanover to Weimar in order to meet face to face that poet and dramatist, whose works he had deeply admired. He was cordially received, and soon became an almost daily visitor at Goethe's house. His modest and gentle disposition, and his genuine enthusiasm for literature and art, and particularly for the drama, seem to have endeared him to the aging poet, who admitted him to an intimacy denied to far abler men. Eckermann's somewhat passive nature was no doubt more agreeable that a more assertive character would have been. Despite his mental vigor, Goethe was in his last years frequently unwell, and there are occasional hints in the 'Conversations' of the ruses which he adopted to avoid wearying himself with uncongenial visitors. The playwright and critic John Oxenford (1812-77) had an acute aptitude for languages. Although he translated both Molière and Calderón into English, he specialised in German translations and set high standards, not least with his rendering of several works by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). Among the greatest literary figures of his day, Goethe combined considerable achievements as a poet, novelist and playwright with his diverse interests in natural science and politics. This two-volume translation of his autobiography first appeared in 1848-9. In Volume 1, Goethe tells the story of his life from the day he was born until the publication of The Sorrows of Young Werther, which attained cult status almost immediately after it was released in 1774. As the protagonist of his own story, Goethe reflects here on how he himself came of age.
