Vladimir Lenin

Lenin wrote The State and Revolution in August and September 1917, when he was in hiding. When Lenin left Switzerland for Russia in April 1917, he feared arrest by the Provisional Government. The State and Revolution describes the role of the State in society, the necessity of proletarian revolution, and the theoretic inadequacies of social democracy in achieving revolution to establish the dictatorship of the proletariat. Lenin's direct and simple definition of the State is that "the State is a special organisation of force: it is an organisation of violence for the suppression of some class. Lenin declared that the task of the Revolution was to smash the State. Lenin had little to say of the institutional form of this transition period. There was a strong emphasis on the dictatorship of the proletariat.

THIS book is a slice of intensified history—history as I saw it. It does not pretend to be anything but a detailed account of the November Revolution, when the Bolsheviki, at the head of the workers and soldiers, seized the state power of Russia and placed it in the hands of the Soviets.Naturally most of it deals with “Red Petrograd,” the capital and heart of the insurrection. But the reader must realize that what took place in Petrograd was almost exactly duplicated, with greater or lesser intensity, at different intervals of time, all over Russia.In this book, the first of several which I am writing, I must confine myself to a chronicle of those events which I myself observed and experienced, and those supported by reliable evidence; preceded by two chapters briefly outlining the background and causes of the November Revolution. I am aware that these two chapters make difficult reading, but they are essential to an understanding of what follows.

Ten Days That Shook the World was published in 1919. It is the seminal work regarding the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia and the huge changes it brought not only there but in the wider world, sparking a movement that would pivot it against the West for decades to come. John Reed was a socialist but as journalist was also committed to finding and reporting the truth. There is no doubt he was influenced and coloured by his own personal philosophy. John Reed died the following year, 1920, in Russia on October 17th. He is buried at the Kremlin Wall Necropolis in Moscow, a site normally reserved only for the most prominent Soviet leaders.

Although Reed states that he had "tried to see events with the eye of a conscientious reporter, interested in setting down the truth"[1] during the time of the event, he stated in the preface that "in the struggle my sympathies were not neutral" (since the book leans towards the Bolsheviks and their viewpoints).
