Les évolutions techniques et technologiques accompagnent les créations, facilitent leur mise en oeuvre, les façonnent, les formatent parfois. Les graphistes ont toujours entretenu un lien étroit avec leurs outils. C'est le sujet que nous avions choisi d'aborder dans Graphisme en France en 2012. En effet, à cette époque, le code s'immisçait dans les processus de conception et semblait incarner une évolution prometteuse.

Dix ans se sont écoulés, au cours desquels la question des outils et des possibilités offertes par le numérique s'est amplifiée. Les supports, les applications, les sites internet se sont multipliés, les recherches se sont développées. L'omniprésence du numérique dans notre environnement a favorisé les réflexions critiques et apporté d'autres modèles.

C'est à ce propos que nous avons invité Julie Blanc, Nolwenn Maudet et Anne-Lyse Renon, designers graphiques et chercheuses, et Joost Grootens, designer et chercheur, à partager le fruit de leurs réflexions et de leurs travaux en cours. Leurs contributions mettent en lumière la richesse et la vivacité de leur pensée et l'inventivité des projets des designers qu'ils convoquent.

Le design graphique de ce numéro a été confié au studio F451, co-fondé par Quentin Creuzet, diplômé de l'école Estienne en 2018, et Domitille Debret, diplômée de l'Ensaama Olivier-de-Serres en 2017 et de la Design Academy Eindhoven en 2019. Nous les remercions pour ce numéro, qu'ils ont réalisé en interrogeant l'utilisation d'outils différents, repoussant les limites de la composition et les possibilités de chaque environnement en maintenant la cohérence de l'ensemble. Ils ont choisi le caractère typographique Mercure, dessiné par Charles Mazé et distribué par la fonderie Abyme, dont le dessin est lui-même issu d'une réflexion sur les outils et sur leur évolution.

Comme chaque année, le calendrier présente tous les événements organisés par les nombreux diffuseurs, écoles, enseignants, graphistes, chercheurs qui n'ont de cesse de proposer à tous les publics des expositions, événements, rencontres et ateliers afin de promouvoir le design graphique et la typographie ; il s'accompagne des publications et des prix, qui témoignent de la vitalité de ces domaines.

This book displays and dissects the career and design motives of graphic designer Joost Grootens. A monograph that works like an atlas, it charts in a systematic and neutral fashion the first 100 books designed by Grootens in the past ten years. In the first chapter, '10 years', Grootens uses timelines, lists and plans to trace the course of his career as a designer, the people he works with, the places where the work gets done. In '100 books', the designer dissects his book designs. He recounts the grids, formats, paper stocks, colours and typefaces, but also charts the books' structure and composition. '17,358 pages' shows at actual size a number of spreads of books designed by Grootens, including the internationally honoured atlases. In the text 'I swear I use no art at all' Joost Grootens gives a personal account of making books and the ideas behind his designs.

On the ever-decreasing distinction between those who produce digital data, those who design its visualization and those who use it as a new form of cartography Mapmaking has been an essential part of human development since ancient times: through the art of cartography, people have been able to record geographical explorations and communicate spatial information in relation to themselves and the land around them, using fixed points and lived experiences as references. In the digital age, maps are just as likely to convey the relationships between individual users and amorphous data as they are to depict the relationships between human beings and the stars and planets above. Blind Maps and Blue Dotsexamines the impact of the omnipresent computer on current understandings of data visualization and graphic design, in which the boundaries between producers and users of maps has become increasingly blurred. This text is structured around three contemporary mapmaking practices: Google Maps' location function, referred to as the Blue Dot; a global map that displays the physical activity of users of the fitness app Strava; and the "Situation in Syria" maps series, a regularly updated map of the Syrian conflict designed by an Amsterdam teenager. Like every other field, graphic design must evolve to reflect the modern world and the needs of its people. Blind Maps and Blue Dotsoffers a new approach that acknowledges and even encourages the breakdown of the binary between producer and user.
