This book deals with randomly moving objects and their spreading. The objects considered are particles like atoms and molecules, but also living beings such as humans, animals, plants, bacteria and even abstract entities like ideas, rumors, information, innovations and linguistic features. The book explores and communicates the laws behind these movements and reports about astonishing similarities and very specific features typical of the given object under considerations. Leading scientists in disciplines as diverse as archeology, epidemics, linguistics and sociology, in collaboration with their colleagues from engineering, natural sciences and mathematics, introduce the phenomena of spreading as relevant for their fields. An introductory chapter on “Spreading Fundamentals” provides a common basis for all these considerations, with a minimum of mathematics, selected and presented for enjoying rather than frustrating the reader.

Die Geschichte der Menschheit zeigt, dass die Bildung von Sozialsystemen die Migration ihrer Spezies zur Voraussetzung hat. Bewegung allgemein ist der fundamentale Zustand in Natur und Gesellschaft. Dieser Charakter zeigt sich in verschiedenen Epochen jedoch in unterschiedlicher Intensität. Konnten sich unsere Vorfahren noch in einer eher "statischen" Situation einrichten, in der wesentliche Lebensanschauungen und Verhaltensweisen von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben wurden, sind die Menschen gegenwärtig einem wachsenden Anpassungsdruck ausgesetzt. Diese Dynamik, die den ganzen Erdball ergriffen hat, wird als immanente Eigenschaft unserer Epoche zur "Signatur der Moderne" (Hans Jonas). Ihre Wirkungen rufen heutzutage einerseits euphorische Schöpfungsphantasien, andererseits aber auch Ängste hervor. Die Evangelische Forschungsakademie widmete sich auf ihrer Tagung Anfang Januar 2019 in interdisziplinärer Weise einigen dynamischen Aspekten in Natur, Technik und Gesellschaft unter dem eingrenzenden Generalthema "Ausbreitung und Abgrenzung", die immer im Zusammenhang gesehen werden müssen. Bewusst wurde dabei auch der geschichtliche Horizont in den Blick genommen, der die Nachhaltigkeit dynamischer Prozesse hervortreten lässt. Eine Auswahl der Tagungsbeiträge ist in diesem Band dokumentiert. [Migration. Dynamic Processes in Nature and Society] The world around us is full of movement of both material and immaterial objects, from the dissolution of cube sugar in morning coffee to the incorporation of new species into our fauna and flora and the introduction of new words into our language. The consequences of such "migrations" and the phenomena associated with them are particularly lasting when they take place in our society. The January 2019 conference of the Protestant Research Academy was dedicated to the interdisciplinary discourse on the spread and demarcation in nature and technology, economy and society as well as in language under the conditions of advancing globalization. This volume summarizes the contributions of this conference and offers a wealth of information on an omnipresent phenomenon.
