Buenos Aires, dans les années 1970. Le narrateur, un jeune garçon, vit seul avec sa mère dans les quartiers pauvres de la ville. Abandonné par son père, il voue un amour inconditionnel à cette " belle jeune femme " qu'il aurait bien prise pour maîtresse si elle ne lui avait pas donné la vie. Une jeune femme dont il ignore tout tant elle s'évertue à cultiver son mystère : pourquoi ne répond-elle aux questions de son fils que par d'autres questions ? Où va-t-elle lorsqu'elle l'abandonne à l'improviste, le soir ou au milieu du Jardin des Plantes ? Pourquoi entretient-elle des relations aussi houleuses avec son frère ? Pourquoi refuse-t-elle parfois d'ouvrir les volets de son appartement ou de prendre le téléphone lorsque sa voisine vient la prévenir d'un appel ? Autant de silences et d'incompréhensions qui font surgir de nombreuses interrogations quant à ses activités : est-elle impliquée dans des affaires criminelles ? A-t-elle un amant ?... Julian Lopez fait le portrait émouvant de la relation entre une mère et son fils à Buenos Aires, pendant les années les plus sombres de la dictature argentine de Peron. Suivant le point de vue d'un enfant qui ne comprend pas ce qui lui arrive - sa mère s'efforçant de le protéger de la dure réalité politique - l'auteur glisse, au fil des pages, des détails et de petits indices qui permettent au lecteur d'appréhender cet univers angoissant, ce monde voilé et rempli de secrets qui devient de plus en plus palpable. Jusqu'à la fin où son enfance se trouve définitivement brisée avec la disparition de sa mère : séquestrée ou emprisonnée ? Il ne le saura jamais, de même qu'il ne connaîtra jamais les motifs de cet enlèvement. Aussi littéraire que politique, ce texte est servi par une voix poétique qui exprime des sentiments profonds, parfois contradictoires, avec une grande fluidité et beaucoup de subtilité.
