In augustus 1897 begint de jonge Belgische commandant Adrien de Gerlache aan een driejarige expeditie aan boord van het robuuste schip de Belgica, in de hoop op roem en succes. Zijn bestemming was het nog niet in kaart gebrachte einde van de wereld: het ijzige continent Antarctica. Maar het voornemen van De Gerlache om de eerste te zijn die de geomagnetische zuidpool bereikt, was al snel tot mislukken gedoemd.
