Was nicht vernetzt ist, existiert nicht. So zumindest wird es heute unter dem Eindruck von Computer und Internet suggeriert. Doch die neueste Netzwerktechnik hat viele Vorgeschichten. In drei Jahrhundertschritten 1800 - 1900 - 2000 untersucht der Band Vernetzung als Leitmetapher und zentrale Kulturtechnik der Moderne aus der Perspektive unterschiedlicher Disziplinen. Neue Tendenzen in Diskursanalyse und Wissenspoetik legen es nahe, nicht-lineare, unsystematische Organisationsformen vernetzungslogisch und -asthetisch zu denken. Von der Chaostheorie und der Molekularbiologie gehen ahnliche Impulse aus. Gedachtnistheorien und Assoziationsforschung bestarken die Vermutung, dass sich auch Einzelsubjekte und ganze Kulturen nach Modellen der Vernetzung organisieren. Die Telekommunikation steht im Zeichen der Abkopplung der Kommunikation von Zeit, Raum und leiblicher Prasenz. Die Ablosung des Nationalstaats durch internationale Interessennetze mit ihren Finanz- und Waren-, Verkehrs-, Informations- und Menschenstromen sind der Hintergrund fur die Konjunktur des Vernetzungsmodells. In Kunst und Asthetik ist Vernetzung als poetologisches Prinzip seit 1800 wohlvertraut. Diese entwickeln Modelle netzartiger Organisation, die auch auf ausserasthetische Bereiche anwendbar sind.

This volume brings together the proceedings of a symposium to mark the retirement of Eda Sagarra from the Chair of German (founded 1776) at Trinity College Dublin. It addresses the themes of her major research field, the 19th century as an epoch of literary, social and cultural history. The 'difficulties' of cultural memory of an era which - with varying emphases - has been characterized as the century of liberty, of ideologies, of sciences, of historicism or of realism, are examined from a variety of perspectives in the light of postmodern deconstruction of both literature and history.
