Con una sencilla reflexión, la que señala que el sistema económico capitalista consiste en la producción y el intercambio de mercancías, arranca El capital. Desde ella es posible ir desentrañando el funcionamiento de este y desgranando todas las categorías que lo componen: el intercambio solo es posible si existe una medida de valor que equipare mercancías; este valor posibilita, además, el paso del trueque al intercambio por dinero o la venta; que el modo de generar riqueza, en esta dinámica, es el intercambio de las mercancías por dinero y además hace que el dinero se transforme en capital… De este modo se derivan unos conceptos de otros: valor de uso, valor de cambio, uso del dinero para el intercambio y para acumulación de capital, trabajo y fuerza de trabajo, capital constante y variable, tasa de plusvalía y tasa de ganancia… todo ello para explicar en qué consiste el capitalismo y diagnosticar cuáles son sus consecuencias.
