The Romance of a Christmas Card

The tale of Rebecca's adventures after she leaves her home at Sunnybrook Farm to go live in town with her spinster aunts, one harsh and demanding, the other soft and sentimental.

"This story," said Kate Douglas Wiggin, "could never have been written had I not as a child and girl been driven once a year to the Shaker meeting at the little village of Alfred, sixteen miles distant. The services were then open to the public. . . . I learned to know the brethren and sisters, and the Elder, as years went by, and often went to the main house to spend a day or two as the guest of Eldress Harriet, a saint, if ever there was one, or, later, with dear Sister Lucinda. . . . "Needless to say, I read every word of the book to my Shaker friends before it was published. They took a deep interest in it, evincing keen delight in my rather facetious but wholly imaginary portrait of 'Brother Ansel, ' a 'born Shaker, ' and sadly confessing that my two young lovers, 'Hetty' and 'Nathan, ' who could not endure the rigors of the Shaker faith and fled together in the night to marry and join the world's people, --that this tragedy had often occurred in their community."

Kate Douglas Wiggin, nee Smith (1856-1923) was an American children's author and educator. She was born in Philadelphia, and was of Welsh descent. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878 (the "Silver Street Free Kindergarten"). With her sister in the 1880s she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers. Her best known books are The Story of Patsy (1883), The Birds' Christmas Carol (1887), Polly Oliver's Problem (1893), A Cathedral Courtship (1893), The Village Watch-Tower (1896), Marm Lisa (1897) and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1903).

Kate Douglas Wiggin (1856-1923) was an important reformer of children's education at the turn of the century. During a period when children's place in society was little other than cheap labor, Kate Douglas Wiggin was dedicated to the betterment of youth. She was the first person to found a free kindergarten school in San Francisco in 1878. Her passion for children's rights carried over to her successful career as an author of children's books. In her 1887 tale "The Birds' Christmas Carol", Kate Douglas Wiggin tells the story of the angelic Carol Bird, a young girl who spreads mirth to everyone around her. Born on Christmas, Carol tragically falls ill when she is five years old. The novel follows her heartwarming plan to hold a majestic Christmas celebration for the neighboring Ruggles family.
